Can anyone give me details on when Adam was kidnapped, by whom, and when? How was the situation resolved. Although I heard the episode in which Grace died, I don't remember this. I may well have been doing other things at the time, like real life.

Here's a start - early 1970 - some time before 19th March when Doris mentioned it in her diary.
Chloe Tempest was one of the kidnappers....
Henry Smith was the other kidnapper. They took Adam to Birmingham and demanded £5,000 ransom but the two kidnappers were so inept that the police quickly found Adam and brought him home.
Adam was three when he was kidnapped. He was born in 1967 so the kidnapping would have been 1970/1971.
I think the theory that Adam was three when he was kidnapped came about by subtracting the year of his birth from the year of his kidnapping.
Actaully, as Adam was born on 22nd June 1967, and the kidnapping happened between 1st Jan and 19th March 1970, he was no more than two years and nine months.
(missing my days of being a TA fan....)
The kidnap itself took place at The Bull. It was fortunate that Sid Perks was alert to what was going on (he apparently knew the kidnappers Smith and Tempest of old) and thanks to information he gave to the police Adam was returned a week later to his parents.
<...kidnap itself took place at The Bull. It was fortunate that Sid Perks was alert...>
Was Sid (shopkeeper rather than licensee's husband at the time) happening to be drinking in the Bull at the time, then? Pity he was not sufficiently alert to step in and do something....!!
The diary entry from Doris on 19th March was prompted by the death of Lilian's first husband the day before btw, and she mentions the by-then-resolved kidnapping episode in passing....

This must have been traumatic for the toddler, Adam. It's odd nobody ever mentions it now. I wonder whether he remembers it?
1970/01/00 January saw the most astonishing event ever to happen in the village. Jennifer and Roger - now living in Borchester - received a threat that Adam would be kidnapped unless a large sum of money were paid over. Instead of telling the police, Jennifer sent Adam to stay with his grandparents at The Bull.
1970/00/00 The kidnappers - Henry Smith and Chloe Tempest - snatched Adam in broad daylight and carried him off to Birmingham. The police at first suspected Sid Perks, but rapidly got on the tracks of Smith and Tempest, and rescued Adam the following day.

Chloe TempestÂ
Wonderful, Rosie. And Chloe Tempest. What a waste of a marvellous name. She should have her own crime series at the very least.

Thank you all - I must say Jennifer doesn't seem to remember it. If one of my children had been kidnapped at that very young age, I would be still thinking about it.

Excellent Rosie. This storyline was meant to boost flagging ratings which TA was experiencing at the time. Unfortunately, with a storyline this big it was impossible for any other storylines to have a look-in. How can you discuss other more mundane matters (like milking, drilling, etc.) when this item is topical? In fact as I recall this storyline seemed too big for TA. A few years later, Adam and the adder was a far better story and more in keeping with the TA theme.

No wonder Adam took off for Africa as soon as he was old enough. Much safer than Ambridge.
Indeed, but it had the opposite effect, through sheer melodrama and impluaisibility, and led to the sacking of the script editor of the day.
Those were the days, indeed....
