Shula has been in the lat episodes a great deal with her decision to leave St Stephens and her dislike of Usha. But does anyone remember if some time in the 70s Shula had a relationship with Neil?

She most certainly had a relationship with Neil, an extremely close relationship.

Thanks!
Perhaps Reggie remembers in what year this close relationship occurred?

Sorry I can't remember and I don't have any reference books. But I'm sure there are people who can answer your question.

1977 apparently. Shula and Neil stayed up all night on Lakey Hill watching the bonfire beacon chain.
It's before my time but I was always under the impression the interest was much more on his side than hers, and she tried to let him down gently
Shula used to like a bit of rough and whilst the local Army Battalion was posted to Northern Ireland she made do with Neyull for a little while. Unfortunately he could not fulfil her voracious sexual appetite.

Yes, Neil was keener on Shula than the other way round and she dumped him. Despite a persisting rumour that they made the beast with two backs I think this is wishful thinking.
I agree, Mike. Certainly I cannot remember anything explicit and, whilst Shula might have dallied with the thought of dalliance, I don't think that the 70s were ready for such a flagrant flaunting of the social order.
I should hope so.

More to the point, this was Shula Archer (pre-nicking-Richard-off-Usha days). A bit of light handholding or a good night kiss or two.

Actually, yes (though Neil would have liked to have got his leg over).

sure was --- but did add a bit of amusement at the time --- bosses' daughter and pigmnan stories
Then she had a good few friends over the years!

my memory is that although Neil and Shula had their night NOTHING HAPPENED. Neil had the hots for Shula, but come come he was not quite her class. Christine marrying George was enough for the family to get their heads around. Shula carrying on with Neil? There would be talk in the village. And we can't have that.
The something which (finally) did happen with Shula was surely with that caddish journalist - the young Conservative. Gosh, struggling here for his name. I want to say Simon.
Then set her cap at Mark Hebden. Mark had been in a relationship with one the most colourful characters ever to drip from a SW's pen - Jackie Woodstock. Oooh I miss her. David Archer seems to have forgotten her existence because they dated, too. Anyway after some on again off again stuff (which I think included some happy times with Nigel) Shula got engaged to Mark in the early/mid 1980s..but I am sure she cashed her chips in with the young Tory journalist and not Neil.

This is the kind of romance that lasts longest - at least in fiction. The mystery of the Might-have-Been. Poor Neil.

They certainly were - viz the never to be forgotten scene when Nige, staying the night in Brookfield's spare room, snuck along the corridor to say goodnight to Shula, as it were, and got into bed with Phil by mistake.
I remember clearly Shula playing the guitar and singing to Neil and the programme ending with a strangled chord, the rest being left to the imagination of the listeners.
I don't think that it was ever made clear whether or not the relationship was physically consummated. However, Phil was certainly concerned about his pig man having the hots for his daughter, though more out of concern for the welfare of the pigs.
