It just occurred to me to wonder how much the actors know about their characters - in particular, would the person acting Ryan have known that he was acting a liar? Or do they, in effect, just deliver the script?

I can't imagine any actor or actress could play a part without first knowing the background of the character. When introducing a new character the scriptwriters would have the determined the personality of the character at the script conferences and this would be borne in mind when casting the part. An example is the part of Clarrie, who has been played by three actresses, but has remained the same character. The four Dan's were slightly different, but they were always Dan the patriarch.
Isn't it the same as if you are doing it live on stage?
Don't you have to get into the persona of the character (past, present and future) to truly play the part?
Is this the "do I", "don't I" question for all understudies, as well as, "why bother?"
But if they were doing it live on stage they'd know the whole plot of the play from beginning to end before starting. In a soap, they'd only know about 6 weeks ahead what was going to happen and how long they were going to last.

The actor who played Sam knew that he wasn't going to last for ever and had a specific storyline.
OTOH, Kenton was supposed to make a fairly brief visit, but proved popular with listeners and was kept.
Ryan looks to be a 'Sam', so probably did know all along.

No, he didn't.
He apparently said so on that programme that I didn't watch, but it is not true.
Did the actor who played Owen/Taylor know about the personality change I wonder?
Would he have cared if he did?

Would you please tell me how you know this to be untrue? I heard Robin Pirongs say that in the programme you mention, and had no reason to disbelieve it.
Thanks

Because long before the hype programme, someone asked Keri if Sam had been brought in as a love interest for Ruth, and Keri categorically denied it, and said wtte that the storyline had developed much, much later. Mike remembers this, and I have no reason to disbelieve mike.

Thanks, Rosie.
Hmm. Two conflicting stories. But which one was telling the truth?
They might both have been. Pirongs might have been told that his character was going to have a two-and-a-half-year story arc, even though the original intention was not for him to be specifically a love interest for Ruth.
(I did hear something in his voice during Sam's job interview that convinced me that he fancied Ruth, so I don't believe there was nothing along those lines thought about before Sam appeared.)

Keri said something like, we don't tell actors that far ahead.
Sam' was making it up.
I notice that Keri hasn't answered the question - perhaps we can hope that Ryan hasn't been telling lies after all?

What does that mean nowadays. Lots of men fancy lots of women they work with or are likely to work with, but it doesn't really mean much. You can fancy someone a lot on a Thursday afternoon, but by Monday, you wonder why. It's all gone.

Yes, but TA isn't life, it's scripted drama, in which things are done For A Reason.
