I have some vague memory of Squire Lawson Hope letting Doris use the cottage, but it not being hers to pass on to Shula. I seem to remember that there was some fuss when she actually left the cottage to Shula in her will. Am I going bonkers?

Never bonkers, damson.
IIRC, Squire left Doris Glebe Cottage because Doris used to be maid to Mrs Squire.
Doris left GC to Shula - favourite grandchild. I can't remember any fuss.

Letty Lawson-Hope left Glebe Cottage and 4 acres of land to Doris Archer for her lifetime, but in the early seventies, Doris and Dan bought the freehold for £2000.

I'm guessing here, but was the &# an early version of the TEA, with one &# worth about 1.5d in the old money (as those extremely annoying weather forecasters say)?

two thousand pounds (dunno why pound sign sometimes does not print, sorry)
I did say thank you, Rosie T, but I seem not to have pressed the post button. (Definitely going bonkers)
