why is Caroline Will's godmother? Was Clarris very close to Caroline at the time Will was born?
Probably down to Eddie, sidling up with some excuse that poor little Willum's auntie had dropped out and would Caroline oblige. She has got lots of dosh and is related to a Lord.

IIRC Caroline owned a share in The Bull at the time Clarrie was working as a bar maid - possibly joint shares with Guy Pemberton [sorry, I'm not Rosie here.] Caroline had certainly mentored Clarrie when she got married, teaching her to cook and some household/ hotel-style management.
Have a vague hunch that Clarrie actually went into labour in The Bull with Caroline calling the ambulance or taking her to hospital - but I could have invented that, so don't take it as top N&Q Industry Standard information.

Um, Caro (still Bone) was working at GG (in the Royal Garden Suite, I think), but she had taught Clarrie to cook, when they were both workers at The Bull (Clarrie was Jill's Mother's Help at Brookfield, but Clarrie's mum had never let her in the kitchen, and Jill was rather appalled at Clarrie's lack of meal-skills.
"When her first baby was on the way, Clarrie spent £28 on rabbit patterned wallpaper for the nursery and bought a tiger mobile and a teddy. Pat Archer lent her maternity nightdresses and baby things. Eddie, sick of all these expensive preparations rowed with his wife and stormed out. Clarrie, left on her own, fell down some steps and, frightened of losing the baby, was rushed to Borchester General Hospital. A remorseful Eddie was soon at her side."
as I recall, Caro had called round to Grange Farm, and was the person who rushed Clarrie to hospital, and Clarrie asked her to be godmother in gratitude for saving William's life (as she supposed). Eddie said yep, she had the money, and might leave him a fortune.
Caroline is also Danie's godmother, and was besotted with /him/ for the first few months of his life, but she doesn't seem to remember any more, she ignores him, no Posh Cows for Dear Daniel, or saying what a lovely chap he is.
[sigh] Poor Daniel!

So how did Caro get part shares in The Bull? Were they inherited from Guy when he died?

Yes, but she wasn't married to him when he bought The Bull, was she?
She was left the Dower hose and Guy's share of the The Bull, and Simon** got the Estate.

Sorry Rosie but that typo really had me grinning. What did she do with the hose?

No the hose went to Clarrie - subsequently Eddie and Joe used them to strain home-brewed wine.
Rosie, I know you know most stuff, but I'm sure Caro *isn't* Daniel's godmother. She was Shula's birth partner, but I remember a conversation between Shula & Caro where Shula apologised for not asking her to be a godmother because Caro is an atheist. Caro quite understood the reason.

Yes, i am wrong, she was unofficial godmother, you are absolutely correct.
She did a lot of "I am going to be a real help to you, Shula," and bringing toys, clothes, attention etc.
Then ignored him.
