It was recently mentioned in DTA that Joe Grundy has a criminal record, but the exact nature of his crime was not explained.
Why does he have a record? Was it about dodgy farm dealings, health and safety etc, or something different?
Thank you.
He certainly was fined for not properly dipping his sheep although I can't remember exactly when this was. I do however remember that he used a watering can rather than an immersing trough and that it was David who reported him to the authorities.

Thank you, taddydogman.
Interesting that David was a "snitch". Perhaps he was blameless himself in those days, ie he hadn't killed any badgers yet.

Then when sheep dipping was no longer mandatory joe approache Phil Archer JP to see if there was a way he could get his fine money back, since it was no longer an offence

Snork! Just wonderful. I can also imagine Eddie Grundy doing something like that.
< Interesting that David was a "snitch". >
IIRC (this was the early 1980s?) David was concerned that his own sheep may be cross-infected hence his concern. Brokefailed was then heavily reliant on sheep farming and David's decision to phase them out signified that he was now 'Mr Archer' and Phil was no longer the boss.
Hygiene and animal welfare were never paramount at Grange Farm and this has been (conveniently) forgotten by SWs in recent years who have rehabilitated Joe Grundy from an indolent lazy cantankerous and embittered old man to near sanctification.
I think* there was another Grange Farm scam that involved the Grungy's claiming EU subsidies for cows (or sheep) they didn't actually have. This was foiled by an aerial count - by helicopter? - and there was some scheme planned by Eddie and Joe to make models of bogus animals that couldn't be spotted as bogus from the air.
* Did this storyline, or something like it, happen or did I dream it up?

Think that might have been a Ballykissangel story line
It certainly doesn't ring any bells with me.

Yup - Ballykissangel
Eamonn, the ancient mountain farmer constructed 200 wooden sheep to confuse the EU satellite that was allegedly checking on his agricultural subsidy application.
Brokefailed was then heavily reliant on sheep farming and David's decision to phase them out signified that he was now 'Mr Archer' and Phil was no longer the boss.Â
I think you're thinking of pigs. Phil loved his pigs but David felt they were uneconomic. Brookfield still has lots of sheep - they were getting ready for lambing last week, and Hassett Hills lamb is one of their mainstay products.

Eddie Grundy has a criminal record.
"Poor Pig" with "Clarrie's Song" and "Poor Pater" on the reverse side.
Joe claimed subsidy for sheep that actually belonged to Mike Tucker (this was before MT went bust).
I don't know if he was actually prosecuted for it, though.
