Please may I have a brief version of what Brenda has done? Missed a few episodes and lost as to why Tom is so betrayed!
she was in matt's office collecting something she'd forgotten when she overheard elements of a conversation between matt and chalky. she was then discovered 'earwigging' by chalky and threatened to keep schtum about anything she'd heard (from what i remember of the situation she only really heard loud voices from behind a door and din't really hear anything /that/ incriminating) - matt then 'smoothed things over' with chalky convincing him that brenda would kep it under her hat. he then made an offer to buy out brian's part of the tom archer chipolata empire as a 'sweetener' or a loyalty 'bonus'/bribe to brenda.
she didn't tell the chipolata kid the truth about it and acted all surprised when matt did make th eoffer to tom, as if it were news to her.
tom is irked that she disn't tell him immediately.
that's how i remember it .
But why do some say she has broken the law and some say she has done nothing wrong? If she broke the law, what law? and why didn't the policewoman say anything about that when B voluntarily confessed?
i think, if i remember correctly, that brenda as an employee of matt was questioned regarding the dodgy dealings and signing or witnessing of documents pertaining to the c3pl shenanigans that chalky and matt are likely to get banged up for.
not sure of the legal position of all this but maybe she could done as an accessory if it can be proved that she knew that the company was up that brown smelly creek without a paddle when she did what she did.
i'm not 100% sure of the above though so maybe someone else will be able to give the full skinny on that aspect of the storyline.

When Brenda was questioned she spontaneously admitted to having accepted Matt's bribe. I think she said something like "I didn't know Matt and Chalky were doing anything wrong till Matt bribed me" - dropping him right in it.
I think the thing that she (and matt) have done wrong is probably the same as Tom, Helen and Mike over the accident - conspiracy to pervert the course of justice (that sounds right?) ie ploting together to cover something up. The so called "bribe" is incidental, it's the "you know something dodgy which you ought to report but you agree not to" that is the thing.
The issue is, did Brenda really know anything that bad? it's not clear to me that she did at all.

Brenda didn't know what she knew, but knew enough to know that Matt's cash offer was fortuitously timed. Matt & Chalkly knew that Brenda should not have known what they thought she knew but did not know that Brenda knew she did not know what she knew, because they thought that Brenda knew what she should not have known about what /they/ knew.
Tom knew only that Brenda was trying to shaft him.
'sobvious really ....
