The Royal Show

  On Sunday Jill and Ruth were discussing the sad news that this year's Royal Show is to be the last.I agree its a great shame that this highlight of the farming calander will no longer take place. The Royal has been a part of TA for many years and it was natural to hear it mentioned in the programme. Please would it be possible for some inside information on how this particular topical insert was arranged?

  As I understand it, the usual procedure is to have a writers' meeting to decide how the issue should be handled, find out which actors/actresses are available at short notice, choose which characters to write for and write a script (usually adapting an already recorded scene if possible), call the actors in and record it, then slot it in.
  
  Obviously I don't have information about this particular case, but I'd imagine it more or less followed the above procedure.

  Producers' meeting rather than writers, but that was pretty much it.
  
  In this case the decision was made on Friday and the scene re-recorded on Sunday. David was originally in the scene in question so it was rewritten both to take him out and to include the new material.

  This is why TA is sooo Good! You never get 'topical' in other Soaps, too busy being killed off or married or some such. I love the 'realness' of the programme (and I know some will disagree, and there are some stupid SL's but, in general, and, after all, we are still listening, aren't we?)

  Thanks Keri for the explanation. Interesting the re-reoord was last Sunday. I was on a (very enjoyable) guided tour of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú studios in Manchester last Sunday afternoon and while we were in the drama studio I asked whether any topical inserts for TA were ever recorded there if the required actors were in the area, but they said no.
  
  The drama studio in Manchester had a staircase in the corner with various surfaces. Around the studio were cuboards with kitchen sinks, door bells and knockers, etc. It reminded me very muh of the old drama studio at Pebble Mill - but without Jills Aga!

  It seems to have been changed now, but on the day of this particular topical insert, the synopsis claimed that David and Jill were talking about Phil's birthday. So it was clear what changes had been made.
