Am I doing something wrong?
I tried this
and this
but I can't get the emoticons to work.

Now that I see my own message live, I realise that even if I write this: <
and then this: smiley
and finally this: >
the result is still the same, namely , instead of a real emoticon.
The emoticons are disabled on these message boards, as the original posters asked not to have them.
At least, so I believe.

Sukebind, thank you.
If the emoticons are permanently disabled, it might be a good idea to get rid of the link on the right hand side which says "add smileys to messages".
It's funny how you don't even notice whether a board is emoticon-enabled until you want to make one yourself. I have lurked here, but it never even registered that there were no emoticons in sight.
I think the layout of the message board is uniform with all the other Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú boards, so they can't just remove bits. They could put something somewhere to say that smileys don't work on this board, mind you.

It was an executive decision by Keri. I think this was the correct decision but it also lead to one of the most rancorous debates that this board has witnessed.

I like the do-it-yourself emoticons.

Since the Jonathan Ross affair, at least.

Actually, the term 'emoticon' refers to text-based things such as
The yellow, sometimes animated figures you are referring to are usually known as 'smileys' (and are repulsive and the enemy of proper conversation, but that's another matter).
By the way, you might find the FAQ section for this board useful. It covers things such as emoticons/smileys, and many other topics. Click on 'FAQs and Info' from the foot of the menu to the left, then on 'Message board FAQs' from the menu to the top right of the page you're directed to. Unfortunately the links to the abbreviations and jargon pages are broken at the moment, but you can link to find older versions of them in message 37 on this thread: F2693942?thread=5884084&skip=0&show=200#p74968816
And welcome to the board (I assume you're new here, as you've just realised that you can't produce animated smileys). Do pop over to the Bull for your free cyber-drink et al, and I hope you have fun discussing things here.

Leaping Badger, thank you. I /am/ new, and my name is even newer. I joined a couple of weeks ago, because there was something I wanted to discuss in The Village Hall. I used a name then which was specific to the subject I wanted to contribute to. Now I have modified my name, though the link between the two names is very clear to anyone who has heard of Robin Norwood.
In fact, you and wlp had responded to my queries when I posted in Notes & Q on my first day. I will claim my free drink in The Bull, thanks.
