Can anyone tell me what Annette's remark about Brenda was? I've listened twice and I still can't make it out. She expressed surprise that Brenda had dumped Tom, saying something like "She's not exactly Miss England"--but it can't have been that, surely, as I wouldn't have thought an eighteen-year-old would say that.

It was a slightly bitchy comment - made by a girl who is 'vulnerable' and 'insecure' - so quite telling, too.
I completely agree about an 18 year old being unlikely to allude to Miss England, especially someone who has spent a good chunk of their young life living in France - somehow, I'd have expected her to be, well, more a product of the French system (although this is just me airing my own preconceptions, I admit, and I'm not completely sure what I mean by this comment).
Slightly off topic, even Helen is having unvoiced doubts about Annette. When Hannah was curious about what had happened to Tom (the Tamsin story etc), Helen couldn't wait to spill the beans. Annette asks about Tom and is pertly told that it's none of her business.

yes
Thanks.
I heard "looks like she's got a missing gland" which made no sense to me. The girl's daft.
"not exactly in the same league"
Ah, thank-you dondy..
Having just heard it for the third time(!) I think I agree with you.

Thanks, Badgey. I don't know why I couldn't hear that the first time.

Miss France is alive and well, and yes it is Miss.
Tom is 28, Annette is 18. Hannah was nearer to Tom's age. I think it's normal Helen was more forthcoming to Hannah about Tom's private life than to Annette.

I don't think the fact that Helen treated Hannah and Annette differently was anything to do with their respective ages, nor a sign of Helen having "unvoiced doubts" about Annette.
Helen only told Hannah about the Tamsin/supermarket backstory because Hannah had been unfairly berated by Tom when she unwittingly became involved in the dispute between Brian and Tom re the new supermarket deal. Helen explained why the subject made Tom unreasonably angry and tried to smooth things out between the two of them.
When Annette asked directly about Tom and Kirsty, Helen had no similar motive to explain and instead told her that it was none of her business.
Oh, and I couldn't make out what was said about Brenda either - thanks to those who heard it clearly for spelling it out for me. BB
