So far I have seen: snork, snorkity snork, snorkarama, snorkissimo.
My question is, is "snork" stronger than "lol" or "rofl"? Was it invented on this board for those situations where a "lol" or "rofl" was not sufficient because the post was /explosively/ funny?
And what is the situation now? Does everyone just write "snork" to show amusement, or is it supposed to be used in response to what one considers an extraordinarily funny comment?
Thanks in advance.
As far as I know 'snork' means that, as a result of reading the snorkworthy post, food and/or drink that was in the reader's mouth at the time has been splattered across the keyboard/monitor/desk etc. So you see TWRNWA, it means far more than those loathsome abbreviations to which you refer.
What about snorketto, snorkendo, snorkato ?
I think what I'd say is:
a) use whatever word you want to. There is no approved vocab. Don't worry about what other people say.
b) if you want to know the derivation of 'snork', or any other term used on this board, have a look at the FAQs. TO find it, click on 'FAQs and Info' from the foot of the menu to the left, then on 'Message board FAQs' from the menu to the top right of the page you're directed to. Unfortunately the links to the abbreviations and jargon pages are broken at the moment, but you can link to find older versions of them in message 37 on this thread: F2693942?thread=5884084&skip=0&show=200#p74968816
Note that this describes terms that some people do use, it certainly does not suggest what terms you /should/ use.
Personally, I think 'snork' has become overused by some people; strictly, it refers to an involuntary explosion of e.g. coffee all over the computer screen. But that's how things go; people will use things in their own way.
Oh, by the way, I think you asked about the symbol at the end of my posts. It's my paw print. If you see a question mark in a diamond, it suggests that the font you use to view posts does not have the necessary symbol (a capital O with an umlaut).

Mustardlandese, like all languages, evolves. I think snork has pretty firmly been established as a general expression of amusement these days, rather than its more specific origin. ROFS (Rolling On Floor Snorking) is an occasional new variant.

That's what the penultimate paragraph of my post says. I do think, however, that it's a pity that it has tended this way in this case, as it devalues what was actually an extremely useful expression of the utmost hilarity. Now some posters (note: only some posters) seem to use it synonymous with 'giggle' or similar.
I have never seen ROFS, thank goodness. Where have you encountered it? And have you seen it frequently?

Only once or twice, in FA if memory serves. Used it once myself, unwisely.
Ah right, thanks. Hopefully it won't catch on.

Ah. I've always understood it to mean a suppressed laugh that comes out as a sort of snort - laughter with your mouth shut, when you're trying not to disturb others in the vicinity or [esp. at work] not to draw attention to yourself.
The splurt of coffee [other beverages are available] used to be referred to as a 'coffee screen interface' or more bluntly: 'you owe me a new keyboard.'
But probably snork has gone mainstream as a generic expression of amusement. Shame because I rather liked that sense of [almost] laughing despite oneself.

You're right, of course. My brain's not working very well at the moment for various reasons, and I omitted half of what I was going to say and got it about face in the end.
'Snork' represents the sound made when stifling an enormous laugh to try and /avoid/ an involuntary explosion of e.g. coffee all over the computer screen. Or, more generally, when trying and not quite succeeding to suppress a laugh so that your colleagues don't know you're reading a message board and not actually working, etc. As you said.
Thanks for the correction.
As you also note, sadly it seems that many people who now post here seem to think 'Oh, I'd better use 'snork' whenever I see something amusing because it's the ML jargon for amusement'.

That's exactly what I thought until I saw this thread.
I never snork. I never ever use the term OH. (I have been known to snigger snorkily all the way through an offering by SF up the Fantasy Corner but that is definitely an exceptional case!

Aww Badge - I don't know whether to polish my new pedant specs or just arrange my collection of whips.
There is something beguiling though about the idea of secret laughter. I'll always remember my first real snork, late at night trying not to wake the others up, clutching my tummy to contain the mirth. [It was Tadpole's parody of The Shipping Forecast.]
