I was totally convinced that Mrs Hathaway was red-haired. However, this has now been shaken by a poster on a thread in DtA, who claims her hair colour was never mentioned - only that it was lovely.
Anyone remember a specific reference?

I've always thought of her having thick raven coloured hair. I'm sure Brian has referred to it being dark on one or more ocassions, but it may be my imagination.

I think when Siobhán went to the Masked Ball and wore the midnight blue dress, Brian talked about how it set off her raven hair, too, Reggie. New Year 2001, I think,
there you go.
It must be all those references to the flame-haired temptress in DtA that had me believing otherwise

Gosh - I didn't hear it as raven .. or if I did I forgot pretty quickly. I've always seen her with amazing auburn Pre-Raphaelite locks and that image was reinforced by the skin cancer, more common in redheads.
I thought Brian had reminisced / pined about his 'lovely girl with the beautiful red hair'. Or was that a myth created on this board?
I have to say that when she was resident in Ambridge I pictured her with curly black tresses. Don't know whether that came from anything in the programme or just my fevered imagination.
'Ö'
I always thought she had flaming red hair but cannot remember why I thought that - just, as others have said, that Brian pined for his red-headed lover.

That's interesting [well, mildly] because when I saw the pictures of Caroline Lennon on this site I thought she looked all wrong, especially the hair. Was wondering whether people have since transposed the actresses looks onto their soundscape. Maybe not!¬)
I have a recollection that Brian referred to her beautiful red hair when he visited her as she was dying and receiving treatment. However, I not 100% sure and there doesn't appear to be any documentary evidence of her hair colour.
Leaping Badger in message 6
I /think/ the red hair is a messageboard assumption (based on her not liking the green scarf? or something) but, like Reggie, I have a faint memory of Brian (or maybe Jennifer) referring to her ravenhaired tresses at the New Year LL ball

He talked of "your lovely hair" but not a colour, I think?

I also thought she had red hair, and especially fair skin (melanoma story in mind here).

There was a time Brian bought her opals "to match your eyes" but since opals can, according to wiki, be "White, black, red, orange, most of the full spectrum," 'snot much help (well, I don't suppose her eyes were red like a rabbit in a camera).

.. and sometimes all at once! I now see her with red hair and marbled eyes... Oh dear.

Better than with red eyes and marbled hair?

I never thought there was any question of her being anything other than red haired! I'm shocked that this is apparantly nOt so! Rosie, please produce a quote which will reassure me that I didn't just make this up? Of course skin cancer can affect black haired fair skinned people just as well as the more stereotypical red-haired Irish temptresses. My brother and dad are black-haired and celtic skinned but still, I would have sworn that she was a redhead...

There was never any reference in the programme to Siobhan's hair colour, just that her hair was beautiful/wonderful (by Brian, who also said she had a great sense of humour). "Flame-haired" is pure ML invention.
Perhaps she was a dead ringer for Hazel Blears.

I too am sure I remember Brian talking about her lovely red hair when she was dying - though always thought she was a red head because I never understood her saying the green scarf didn't suit her because green is a good colour for the rusty (I am thus myself) - though of course a lot of people are superstitious about wearing green.
Not Irish people surely.
bob
Well apart from the "hangin' men and women for the wearin' o teh green" there is the theory that it is the colour of the little people and that to wear it offends them.
I have a friend who wouldn't dree her daughter in a green frock teh child had been given as a present but she isnt' Irish to my knowledge.
I am of irish extraction and wear green because it suits me (andif you are deathly pale with rusty hair there are enough colours which look wrong without getting superstitious about one of the ones that look right).
Reading some of the discussions of this nature, one begins almost to suspect that the SWs throw in little anomalies like this, either to keep us on our toes, or to play a little game with us.
Could it not also be that Shove-Horn died her hair occasionally? Some women do ...

Brian said, "At least you haven't lost your lovely hair," as I remember it.

Now you're back and, I hope, fully recovered Mr K. and chance of your thoughts on this one?
I always thought it was red, more auburn than ginger.
But did you hear anyone *on air* say it was red?
Oh for goodness sake. EVERYONE knows she had long, wavy, rich auburn tresses, and green eyes of course.

Could a few of our Irish posters pop along to dig her up. I doubt we'd get the eye colour but the hair should be OK.
glen
I'm sure she had red hair but couldn't give you chapter and verse to support it.

We demand a dig! Get Laura to see to it, she knows how to deal with that sort of stuff.
There must be photos, surely? some of them must be in colour.
There's one beside Ruairi's bed. Or has Jenny quietly dropped it down into the cellar?
I thought we heard "blue dress" and "dark hair" on air.
in reply to Victorian Fan
We *definitely* heard the "Midnight Blue dress" on air and I /thought/ we heard the raven hair. But Keri Knows Best.
i go with dark hair too. why cant mr.k support his feelings of her tresses being red.. do they not keep scripts on file?or copies of recordings? it cant be that difficult to find out. i bet a few posters from here, if allowed access to the files could soon discover the truth in no time.
No he doesn't. Not all the time.
I thought Siobhan's hair was deep red too, but that the actress had dark hair.
But I couldn't quote anyone on it!
Alma.
It was red. I';m sure it was red. It was red...
If I say t long enough, will anyone believe me?
And why should poor old Keri have to leaf through scripts? He hasn't been well.
message 38
No. I won't.
I think I heard them talk about her raven tresses with the midnight blue dress.
No, you have to provide evidence, chapter and verse.
I've been following this debate with some interest and thought it time to add my own contribution.
Neither my wife or I have any doubt that Siobhan's hair was red. Like others who have posted on this thread however we are unable to come up with any actual proof.
I am wondering whether there may have been some inconsistency on the part of the SWs regarding this point. I have no doubt at all that one of the residents of Ambridge made a reference to her having "flaming red hair" when she first arrived in but
Sorry. I pressed the wrong button whilst in full flow.
To continue, .........but others obviously heard a reference on TA to her having raven black tresses, which I have to say I don't remember.
Incidentally can anyone else recall Siobhan being a member of the parish council? I have always wondered how she managed to get herself elected. Pewrhaps this is yet another SW inconsistency.

Siobhan was never on the Parish Council. (She was, however, active in running a campaign against some local development (Grange Spinney?) and so was "the woman with the clipboard" for several weeks.)
I'm still of the opinion that "flame-haired temptress was a MB invention and is responsible for this idea that she had red hair. Paddy Wotsit (Adam's biological father) had red hair and there would have been a lot more guff (than there was) about Paddy and Siobhan being related, if the programme actually had said S had red hair, too.
Oh yes she was - and before you come back with "oh no she wasn't" I can tell you that there was an episode when planning applications were being discussed and she queried whether the Grundys should have applied for planning consent for a building they had erected on their land. I can't remember any more details apart from the fact that Neil Carter was also featured in the episode as a councillor.
This episode was broadcast some while before Siobhan's marriage to Tim ended so I think it would have been around 2000/2001.
Sun, 14 Jun 2009 10:46 GMT, in reply to taddydogman in message 44
It is possible that she was present at a parish or district council meeting as a member of the public but she wasn't a member of either council because she wasn't elected!
Yes, Mike. That is precisely the point I am making. She featured in the episode as a bona fide parish councillor but she was never elected, nor did a vacancy arise when she left Ambridge.
Even if she had been present as a member of the public she would not normally have been permitted to join in discussions about planning applications and she would certainly not have been allowed to vote on any application, which she did. I wish I could remember more details but although I have raised this issue previously nonbody else has ever backed me up.
On the hair: apparently we never specified its colour on air.
That's what I thought, it was a joke, wasn't it?
Thanks for that Keri. It just goes to show that we can all make mistakes. I was totally convinced (and so was my wife who isn't usually wrong in these matters) that Siobhan was a redhead.
Keri, can you throw any light on Siobhan's role as a parish councillor? The only way she could have been appointed to the council would have been by co-option but I don't think this was ever mentioned on air.
Mon, 15 Jun 2009 14:36 GMT, in reply to taddydogman in message 49
You don't have to be a councillor to be able to attend a parish council or district council committee meeting. You can address the meeting if you are invited to or with the chair's permission. This has happened several times in TA, not just with Siobhan. Of course local practices may differ and there can be confidential items that the public will be excluded from. The fact that we heard Siobhan at a parish council meeting does not mean that she was a parish councillor!
