Why are there no impaired/disabled people in Ambridge I could have my thread read and discussed by the regulars in the Black Bull and I would be happy as captain bulekingfisher to make a guest apprance in the Black Bull to talk about the Re-launching the ship HAPPYNESS
Probably because it's radio, and the scriptwriters might find it difficult to strike a balance between making characters refer to whatever disability it was, often enough to remind regular listeners/ inform new listeners of it; and the fact that, realistically, it might not be mentioned very often at all once everyone knew about it or had got used to it.
But Mike only has the sight of one eye (does that count?). I did wonder in passing the other day whether that might be why he didn't play cricket (difficulty in judging distances or something?).
Helen born with clicky hips
Christopher born with hare lip/cleft pallette
Arnold Lucas went blind
Mrs, Antrobus had glaucoma(?) and failing eyesight.
Mrs. Potter has always had a zimmer frame.
Lizzie's heart.
Daniel's arthritis.
Em's legs scarred in an accident.
Christine's back.
But they don't seem to have the things that really make a long-term difference, e.g. to where they live or the schools they go to or the jobs they do.
Oh dear, I thought that 'Christine's back' meant 'Christine is back'. Then I put it in context. Disappointed again!
Does anyone understand this?
