But a mug with all the Archers names on but cannot identify 'Tring'. Can anyone help?
How old is it?
There was once a character called Trina (Muir I think) but I think that was in the days before Brian married Jenny!
Zeberdee Tring was a road repair man - I think last heard of over 20 years ago - I don't know if he was written out or just stopped speaking

Zebedee Tring died, in his bed, alone, with only his dog and cat for company.
He was a gardener, or general outdoor handyman, I think.

This brings up (again) the question of whether we can have a "who /was/ who" list of past members of the enclave.
I appreciate that there would be a lot of work involved in getting this list compiled.
DH.
Firstly, nice to be back on the Board again, after a wonderful holiday in Italy.
Zebedee Tring died on my birthday - 28 December. He died in 1973. However, I was born in 1943!
He was played by Graham Rigby.
And I wonder if Graham holds the record for the number of parts played - 7 in all:
Albert Thomas Gibbs (BERT);
Mr Gwilliam;
Bernard Hill;
Frank Mead, father of Polly, who married Sid Perks;
Sam Peters;
Mr Smith;
Zebedee Tring.
Zebedee wasn't gregarious, much preferring the company of his cat and dog.
By jove, I feel better for that!!

There is a list of characters and actors here:
Unfortunately it hasn't been updated since the end of 1997. Maybe someone could bring it up to date as a labour of love.

Welcome back, Keith, and glad you had such a good holiday.
I think that Zebedee was definitely a "roadman" rather than a gardener/handyman.
That is he was employed to walk the roads cutting back vegetation, noting repairs that needed doing and carrying out minor repairs.
In other words a job deemed unnecessary by today's beurocrats.
Which is why:
most rural roadsigns are obscured by vegetation by late May.
many roadsigns are illegible because of a thick growth of green lichen.
potholes are for ever.

Zebedee became an odd-job man when he retired. He had worked as a gardener at Arkwright Hall for 3 years as well, apparently.

Thank you for your kind comment. Yes, it was a really enjoyable holiday, but it's nice to be back on the MB again, among friends.
And, while I'm here, can I please say that I'm always amazed at the names posters come up with - mine is so dull!
Finally for this time, I recall Zebedee's fondness for scrumpy and bread and cheese. I'm kind of fond of these myself.
Keith
