I've asked a couple of times elsewhere about this, and been told [1] that it is rented [2] that it belongs to Matt and [3] that it belongs to Lilian.
Of these the "it is rented" seemed the most authoritative but I can't believe that Matt and Lilian would rent if they could afford to buy, so I incline to think one or other of them owns it but I cannot remember which.
help please?

Matt told Lilian, when explaining that all might be lost except the house, that it was tied up in some kind of trust that (the SFO) would never be able to find their way to. Originally he bought it for them to live in together, previously he'd bought Nightingale Farm (iirc) for her to live in while he was still married to Yvette.
Here's an earlier thread:

We heard Matt (on air) tell Lilian he had bought it "for her" before they moved in. It is extremely unlikely that he put her name on the deeds, however, and now we know it is owned by a trust so the SFO can't filch it from him.
Strikes me that putting it in a trust was very far sighted of Matt, not the sort of thing you might expect him, or anyone, to do normally. It's almost as if he had some advanced knowledge of his financial difficulties.

I think it was backinvention, really.
Kentish Kelt and others, thank you. The other thread was too long ago for me to find easily! My question is answered.
It's fairly usual to find very rich people putting houses into trust Reggie: the trust with a company owning the house is a fairly standard arrangement as it's a way of avoiding IHT.
But from what Matt said about it being very difficult to unravel I assume there are probably several trusts (and companies) in Matt's scheme.
Thanks cath, I suppose I should have guesed that. A tax fiddle. But does he have anyone to inherit it? I'm sure he could run rings round most of our MPs in the fiddling stakes.

He seems to have been aware for years that his business dealings would not stand scrutiny - presumably he didn't resort to this tactic purely to prevent /Lilian/ claiming her share of it (or its' value) if and when they split up.
Kentish Kelt, "presumably he didn't resort to this tactic purely to prevent /Lilian/ claiming her share of it (or its' value) if and when they split up."
After Yvette i think he might have done exactly that and for just that reason, in fact.

But he didn't really need to put the Dower House into a tangled trail leading to its ownership by a trust ... although I take your point, Lilian was far too aware of at least some of what Matt managed to deny Yvette in the divorce settlement.
Also, and although it was only a device to put it on air, he didn't need to explain to Lilian that the property was safe, and in a trust, at a time when the last thing she was thinking of was splitting up with him.
Didn't he need to reassure her that they wouldn't have to move?
But if she's so rich, why hasn't she got any property of her own? Bought at a time when that is what everyone would have advised?
Did it not belong to Lilian at one time when she was married to Ralph? or was it Aunt Laura wh forgot to sign the will and leave it to the colonel?

Arnold Lucas rented it from Ralph, I think. And Lilian sold to Cameron Fraser after Ralph died, then Guy Pemberton bought it, Caro lived in it, then rented it out, then sold it to Matt 2006? 7?
Ambridge Hall was Aunt Laura's, and yes, she didn't get around to signing the will leaving it to Freddy Danby.
She has a just-under-half share in The Bull, doesn't she?
I think she actually owns 51%.
