Anyone remember the Walking Bus Scheme (started by Kathy) when the primary school children first had to go to Loxley Barrett?
How long did that last?
we did a walking bus and it lasted about 18 months - great idea but the logistics (and personalities) were harder to work out than you might think. I prefer the informal arrangements we have now as friends, it seems to work better (although that might also be something about doing without the control freak who pissed us all off in the first place)
But was that from Ambridge to Loxley Barrett? I think those roads would be a bit dangerous for small children even if well supervised though.
Children under eight get free transpoprt if they live over two miles away from school and three miles for the over eights. That being said Cumbria LA provides itmore generously if there are no footpaths in rural areas. I think Loxley Barratt is more than two miles away which would be rather much for a walking bus.
But there was one. What I wanted to know was what happened, how long did it last.
Like lots of other things it got quickly forgotten.
This won't have been from Ambridge to Loxley Barratt. I think it was from points within Ambridge to the school bus pick-up point.
I'll check the details.
Interesting. We have no record of the walking bus in our archive. Can anyone else remember this?
Yes I remember the walking bus in Ambridge. I'd never heard of such a thing before and only read about it in RL afterwards. And since then I have looked at tourist groups trailing around London and think of them as walking buses. All courtesy of TA.
But I can't remember for the life of me where the Ambridge one went. I'm pretty sure it didn't go to LB but that's the extent of my memory. And it was deffo Kathy. Might Pat have also been involved? I just can't remember.
Yes, I think it was Kathy & Pat together.
And people objecting to Pat's involvement as she wasn't the parent of a primary school child, and Pat saying she might be the grandmother of one one day.
I thought that (the Pat thing) was about the school dinners. But I always misremember stuff.
I have no recollection of a walking bus and can't get my head round how it would work in Ambridge, even if it were just getting to the bus stop. Buses here stop in lots of places even in a small village. If there were one central stop in Ambridge, the walking bus would have to trail right round the village collecting children and would take forever. In our village, we had one for a little while that went from the housing estate (where lots of children lived) to the school. Didn't last long at all though.

There was all the palaver over school meals with Kathy and Ruth of all people getting involved. What happened to that? Has Loxley Barratt got a kitchen or do the meals come from somewhere else?
