Was the phrase "batting for Darrington" actually spoken by one of the characters or is the reference to homosexuality an invention of this MB?
I think it was a Mustardland invention from the time when Sean (sp?) and Sid fell out and Sean went off to play cricket for Darrington instead, trying to entice others to go with him.
That is correct. Gay men are sometimes said to "bat for the other side" and in the case of Ambridge/Sean the other side was Darrington.
