Hello everyone, although a fairly long-standing listener myself (since the late 70s, but only sporadically in my student days) this is my first venture onto The Archers boards, so please be gentle with me.
A quick question if I may - when did the character of Carol Grey (Grenville/Tregorran) leave the series and did the lovely Anne Cullen appear in any other radio or TV series either before or afterwards?
Many thanks.

Many years ago, but I don't believe it was a SL, they just sort of faded out. There would be occasional mention of them, someone once said "Carol wants to get back into village life" then they were forgotten about. One of the last SL I remember with them in was Jenny doing some history project and conferring with John Tregorran who then got the idea they could be more than friends and Jenny shrieking with horror at the idea. Well you get the picture. Don't remember them being in much after that, although I wasn't able to listen for periods of time due to living in Ireland and not being able to get Radio4 ( We can now)

I think they moved to Bristol but I can't remember when.
The last time I remember them being heard of (as opposed to heard) was when they were invited to, and attended, an Archer aniversary at Brookfield a few years ago. Could have been either Phil or Jill's seventy-fifth birthday party. I wonder if they'll go to Phil's funeral?

I would think that by now either or both of the characters would have died. They would certainly be well into their eighties.
Came to Jill's landmark birthday 4 years ago, and possibly to Christine's 3 years ago. Sometimes mentioned as having sent xmas cards.
Thanks to you all for your contributions - much appreciated. It will be interesting to see how many names and faces from the past appear at Phil's funeral. By the way, is there a recommended book that gives a comprehensive history of and a background to the series?

A recommended book?
Try "The Book of the Archers" (known on here as TBOTA) dating from 1994 or the later "Archers Encyclopaedia" from 2001. Obviously any recent characters or actors and actresses playing old characters wont have a mention. For those, try the latest "Who's Who in The Archers".

Democritus, Anne Cullen was in Dick Darton,a radio series which preceeded The Archers. She also appeared in a film version of T S Elliot's 'Murder in the Cathedral' in the 50s. I remember hearing her in a radio version of Terrance Rattigan's 'The Winslow Boy.' in the late 60s. It was Anne Cullen's performance as Carol that drew me into The Archers, hence my board name.
Hi Carol, many thanks for your reply and for the information - I'll certainly follow up those leads. As a sci-fi devotee, I believe she also played the part of Peabody in a radio version of Dan Dare from the early 50s. Anne had (has? although I imagine she must be quite elderly by now) a delightful voice and added greatly to the listening enjoyment. Excellent choice for your board name!
Best wishes

Oh memories of listening in me chldhood nicely stirred by this thread. John and Carol's relationship - both marrying other people, then coming together - came over as very sophisticated. Though as said, I was very young at the time!
Seem to recall Mr K saying they were faded out due to lack of good SLs. Seems a shame after such long service not to be given a farewell party. Assume they will be mentioned in regard to the funeral. "I must go and talk to John and Carol" sort of thing.

Yes, it's a shame not to hear from them. With Phil's sad demise and Jack soon to leave us there, would be room for another elderly couple in my opinion. I reckon John must be in his mid eighties and Carol, I think, a little younger.
And John Tregorran could give Jim a run for his money intellectually, couldn't he? That would be good to hear!

Hi Janie, great idea! Bringing back a sprightly and intelligent older couple would be excellent and a bit of an antidote to the recent squabbling and histrionics of the younger generation. Not only that, the Jack Woolley storyline is a bit too close to home for me...
