I've just been looking at the time line and remembered something I have never known. We were away when George Barford died, I didn't know about ML then and I have no idea how it happened.

The actor died suddenly, as far as I remember, and that's why the character was written out quite hastily.

that makes it sound a little gruesome...for the sake of clarity, Jess was still alive and head and body still attached.

That reminds me of "The Rotters Club", a good book IMHO (and on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú TV). That featured the IRA bombing of Birmingham in the 1970s.
A similar misunderstanding occurred, IIRC.
