I didn't realise that the current-Peggy had been part of the original cast of the Archers until I heard the beginning of this week's Desert Island Discs.

However, I always heard Norman Painting referred to as the longest-serving Archers cast member. Why doesn't Peggy get included as joint-longest? Did she have a long break from the show? Or didn't she come in as early on in the first episodes?

Norman Painting was the longest serving actor in the same part who had been in the programme since it started.

I've a feeling that June Spencer played at least one other part and certainly had a break from the progamme in the fifties.

Quoted from the Archers' "Actors" page:

June is the only other current cast member, along with Norman Painting, to have been in the pilot episode in 1950 and the first national episode broadcast on 1 January 1951.

    [...]

In 1950 June had been a busy radio actress for seven years, when one day whilst queuing in the 麻豆官网首页入口 Birmingham canteen, a voice said: 鈥淵ou鈥檙e going to be in The Archers, aren鈥檛 you?鈥 June鈥檚 response was: 鈥淎m I? What are The Archers?鈥 She admits she was rather put out at being told by a stranger that she had apparently been cast - before she had been asked if she would like the part! 聽

I guess that in all the tributes to Norman Painting Mrs Spencer wasn't mentioned because they were err.. tributes to Norman Painting.

Otherwise I can't imagine why the fact that she was longest serving member alongside Norman Painting shouldn't be mentioned.

    June Spencer played
    Mary Benson
    Rita Flynn
    Emily Spenlowe
    Peggy Archer

I think there was a period of years when Thelma Rogers played Peggy, as June Spencer was doing other things and the actor was replaced.

Yes, (as Reggie says) June Spencer didn't play the same character for the entire programme run (until death) so her record isn't (quite) in the same class as Norman Painting's.

I think that the "other things" she was doing was having a family (and not a la Helen)
