Just wondering when TVOA arrived, and consequently, when he'll need to renew his 'contract'. Will we be privy to a conversation with whomever it is in the diosese - the archdeacon? - who is responsible?
TVOA arrived in Ambridge in the summer of 2003.
Hmmm. That means that he's extended his first 'term' already. Can't remember if it's 4 or 5 years they get. Don't suppose it was a SL though. (if it's 4 years, I guess it's up for renewal next year...)

He rang the bell 8 times ["By ringing the bell eight times, Alan the new vicar signifies that he will be around for eight years - quaint!"] so August 3rd 2011 AT THE LATEST! (It's in my diary)
I thought C of E vicars could stay for ever, (unless they choose to go or do something really wicked)?

Well, bugger that, he /*_said_*/ he'd only stay 8 years, and I shall start the collection for a leaving present this August, to give him _plenty_ of time to find another job.
People can change their minds.
But Alan hadn't met Usha then, and she likes Ambridge and she wants to keep that cottage for their retirement.
There was one at the end of the road where my parents lived, he and his family were there for many years.
Well, I am not allowing him to change his mind, so there.
He's going. On or before 3rd August 2011
Wonder what you are going to do about it if he & Usha refuse to go? A quiet word with the new bishop or with Archdeacon Rachel?
Rosie, I've put a fiver in the post for your collection.
And I've marked 3rd August 2011 with a very heavy red circle in my diary. Am laying down the champagne as we speak.

Why so agressive?
LJG -
It depends on the type of living. So if, for example, the Bishop suspends the living of a parish (=takes away the right of the holder of the advowson to appoint the clergy), then the priest-in-charge (having been suspended, the living can no longer be a vicarage or rectory so no Vicar or Rector, but priest-in-charge instead) appointed by the Bishop will usually have a five year stint, unless the Bishop wants them out any sooner.
Clergy jobs get advertised online these days, I guess clergy can apply for a new living/job at any time. But plenty of livings have been suspended around the country because of the power it gives the Bishop.
Who is being aggressive?
(sticks nose in)
I couldn't see anything aggressive in Message 9, LJG.
I thought *they* were being aggressive, trying to chase Alan & Usha out before they've shown any sign of wanting to go. When we know she wants to keep her cottage for their retirement.

From previous experience with the maps, tectonic movements emanating outwards from the Am will have moved it "just past the bypass" by the time they retire.

It was the "What are you going to do about it?" that's aggressive, Lemon. I was merely making a note, and the collection of letters gets confrontational
It depends on the type of living.Â
So, do we know Alan's status? Is he a vicar or a priest-in-charge? What power does the Bishop have over his contract?
I have to say, I don't actually mind TVOA, and the OP was really just about the process of appointing a vicar, and the possibility of a SL. (probably been done before, though maybe it's as much a part of the rhythm of the village as lambing)
Oh well.
I just saw this as a bit of light-hearted banter, fairly typical of the stuff in DTA (yes, I know we're in N&Q.)
Barn Owl,
I think Alan's running a United Benefice (I think it's five parishes?) and my knowledge is too limited to know what the implications are for his "terms and conditions".
There are some massive United Benefices in Norfolk - twelve or thirteen parishes, for example. An alternative approach is a Team Ministry, where you have a number of parishes run together, maybe one fulltime clergy and one or two part-time plus some non-stipendary or lay persons divvying out all the tasks.
