I recently heard on Desert Island Discs, where she was a guest, that on the demise of Norman Painting, the only remaining original member of the cast is 'Peggy Archer'. Surely Leslie Saweard (Chris) was in the prog from the start?
As a child, I used to ride at Umberslade Stables, near Hockley Heath and imagine our surprise when one day 'Phil', 'Chris' and 'Grace' came, as themselves, to ride there while technicians recorded the original horse/stable noises to be used on the programme!

Hi, Grandmawelly. Christine was originally played by Pamela Mant. I don't know when Leslie took over the role. Pamela was married to John Franklin, who I think was also in TA. They both lived & worked in Ireland & Pamela played in our popular TV soap 'The Reardons' for some years.

Leslie Saweard has been playing Christine in the Archers since 1953 - when she was just 19!

Lesley Saweard allegedly got the part not because she was an actress but because someone had met her at a fete and thought she sounded just like Pamela Mant.
This was back in the days when Godfrey Bazeley had a running battle with Equity because he wanted to employ real country people rather than Equity members. He lost that battle eventually but, judging by some of the dodgy accents now found in Ambridge, his instincts might have been right.
