Listening to Peggy talking recently about Jack the First and his drinking, thinking about David following Phil into the farm and then hearing Tony the consummate farmer checking his silage clamp, I got to wondering why Tony wnt into farming and how he learned "the trade". If his father was a publican, and a drunkard, did he learn at the knee of his uncle Phil or his grandfather (Dan?)Was this ever in doubt, and how did he come to take on Bridge farm - was he already the tenant farmer there when he met Pat?

Lilian I think was a horsey type and rant the stables becuase of Aunty Chris, who presumably got it from Dan n Doris - was it the same for Tony and Phil? As a listener since the early eighties I never had a sense of much closeness between Tony and Phil (or Lilian and Aunty Chris, some to think of it). All off-air?

Tony did work at Brookfield in his late teens or early twenties. He got rather resentful that he wouldn't get a share in it as the eldest son of Dan's eldest son.

Can't exactly remember the details of him taking over the tenancy of Bridge Farm but he was already the tenant when he met Pat as his previous gf had been the peripatetic farm secretary who did his paper work.

I have a feeling he may originally have been in partnership with Pat's uncle Hayden but I may have this completely wrong.

Others may be able to fill in details or correct me where I'm wrong.

Tony also worked for Ralph Bellamy who then married Lilian. And so, after one too many of Tony's strops, Ralph famously sacked his brother-in-law.

The Jobs Fairy soon rescued Tony of course.
