I seem to remember last year there was a storyline about the link between badgers and TB and the Grundys talked about a theory that could control the spread of the TB. Can anyone remember what that theory was please? I seem to recall it may have been something to do with the badgers diet?

I believe the idea was to put out salt licks for the badgers because they weren't getting enough salt on their crisps.

Hallo vivvy - welcome to the boards. I think the theory is based upon evidence of a lack of various trace minerals in the diet of badgers [and possibly cattle] which is presumed to depress their immune systems and this render them more vulnerable to TB. Selenium and Magnesium were mentioned. The proposal was to leave molasses-based licks for them, a strategy which appears to have worked in various places and hopefully can at least do no harm.

Mike I believe you have confused the badgers' licks with David sprinkling salt on his pasture to top up the soil nutrients. As any countryman will tell you, badgers wont touch salt without vinegar.

Although, to pour cold water on your theory, I hate salt and vinegar crisps with a vengeance and would far rather cheese and onion were laid out in the hedgerows.

Ahem I last saw a badger at 1 am this Saturday morning, about thirty yards from the house, loping towards a place where there are no cheese'n'onion hedgerows. Observation suggested that either the creature had been in mud or it had been paddling up to its knees in best Balsamic.
