    Hi Tayler, hi all

How many pints of milk is Mike selling per week currently, & do we know what his optimum volume target is?

    Kind regards
    RS Acre

I think we're also entitled to know precisely what other products are sold on the round and in what quanties. Sterling Gold? Borsetshire Blue? Tom Archer Sausages? Organic Yoghurt? Not to mention orange juice, single cream, butter etc.

Thanks Tayler. My request was meant to be a bit tongue in cheek so don't pull all the stops out to find out the exact composition and quantity of all the other produce on the round.

Reggie, I'm surprised you didn't ask for a map of the routes taken by Jazzer and Harry on their rounds. And what make and model of float do they drive?

Yes, what has happened to the milk round[s]? Last time the milk was being mentioned, there were not enough new customers to justify the increase in rounds or production, and the leafleting wasn't bringing them in in sufficient quantity. Then it all went quiet because the SL moved on to the veal calves, and since then, nothing. Is Harry still employed? What does he *do*, and if it is a milk-round, what does he use for transport and where is the round and why didn't we hear them buy another van if there are now two rounds?

Ah, yes, more questions than answers. When they get to the full herd (of which we hear no progress) they will need to shift 800 odd pints a week to over 500 new customers in a very rural area which is probably already covered by other suppliers.

Another major success for our campaigning journalist and agriculture editor. Amongst the 100 most influential, I believe.

A few of Brenda's brilliantly crafted leaflets will do the trick.

I recall the purchase of a 2nd van being referred to on air at some point.

When the milkround started the doorstep price, the number of pints that were being sold etc were all debated at length on the MB. As usual the debate didn't get further than Ayrshire Cowman saying it was all impossible but Mr K vouchsafed that the storyline was based on a RL local milk distribution busuness started by a farmer somewhere in the UK. Many people refused to believe that customers would pay 50% more than the supermarket price for delivery of a local product but apparently they do. In the early days we knew exactly how many cows Ollie had and I guess these details will be in a thread somewhere.

mike, Grange Farm had thirty milkers at the start of 2010, according to "Who's Who in the Archers"; Vicky added half of twenty-five cows, that is either twelve or thirteen, with another thirteen or twelve due to arrive some time this autumn.

The last we heard, they not got enough new customers to use all the milk they would now be able to provide. That was on air, not message-board attempts to make sense of the business.

The purchase of new plant (going up north in the snow, I *think*) happened before that, though, and I think it was even before the new cows had arrived, though I might be wrong about that: I had begun to lose the will to live when I contemplated this SL, by then.

Yes, that sounds about right. (I meant to indicate that we did hear on air how many cows there were at the start, but that info hasn't been repeated recently AFAICR.) I remember the debate at the start because we were all using figures for yield, price of milk etc to try and determine the viability or otherwise of the business.

While it is true that we never heard on air that they found the extra customers we did hear several weeks of them trying. I think we can assume that they did (more or less) reach their target because otherwise they would probably have had to pull the plug by now.

mike, we heard them trying, but the last we heard about their trying was that they hadn't got enough; that was what worried me. Then the whole veal SL got going, and the actual milk-round hasn't as far as I know been heard of again. They hired Harry, and at that point there wasn't as far as we seemed to have been told on air a round for him to do. And they hired Harry *after* Vicky had decided she was one of the partnership, so presumably after she had got the cows, but I thought at the time that it was before they had a vehicle for him to use. They agreed to the expansion before they did any market research to find out whether they could sell more milk and justify the expense of another vehicle and another employee, that much I do know.

If you can remember actual incidents, or roughly what weeks, I could go and have a look or even a listen, but I can't remember anything after Mike saying that they had [some number] new customers and although that wasn't enough, he was sure they would pick some up by word of mouth. After that it all went quiet on that front as far as I can remember.
