Can anyone recall an Archers episode - sometime in the mid-to-late 1950s I think - when a young girl was given a horse or pony as her Christmas present, and she got so excited that her father told her to calm down a bit?
I have a vivid recollection of that broadcast, and would just like to know when it was transmitted. You know how it is when you get to my age.
Many thanks for any light you can shed.

I can't remember.
Sounds like Jack (Mark 1) and Lilian.

Sorry, Ferrite, I was born 6yrs too late. Only started absorbing TA in 1955, shortly before I was born.

Yes of course I remember it. The young girl in question was Lilian (played by Elizabeth Marlowe, the REAL Lilian) and the pony was.....Pensioner!
When Lilian was asked why she had given the pony that name she did explain, but unfortunately I can't quite remember the reasoning exactly. Can anyone else remember?

Hello FerriteRod
Pensionner was Lilian's Christmas present from Jack and Peggy when she was 14 - so would be 1961.
I've no idea why the horse was called Pensionner. I'll check with the archivist.

The archive doesn't have any details on why Lilian's horse was given the name Pensioner. If anyone does remember, please post the details here!
Thanks,
Tayler

Is he a kindly old archivist?

I definately remember Lilian explaining to someone why she had named the pony Pensioner and it was something to do with the cost or expense of either purchasing or keeping the pony. Unfortunately, my memory of the exact reason she gave has faded. I bet Elizabeth Marlowe would remember....?

Many thanks to all for this feedback, you're very kind. Are we agreed it was Christmas 1961 then? Any advances?
