I would like to think I'm not a particularly stupid person and I try really hard to pay attention each Summer but I still haven't got a clue how the "single wicket" is played.
Can anybody out there enlighten me?

While you're waiting for the proper cricketers to arrive here's the gist:
A single wicket game features two people rather than two teams. It's a limited overs game in which each competitor both bats and bowls. The fielding places are filled by other competitors who are either waiting for their goes or have been knocked out of the competition already.
So, imagine Eddie Vs Clarrie. Clarrie bats and Eddie bowls. Clarrie might have, say, five overs to score as many runs as she can. Once her time is up, either she reached the end of her overs or she was 'out' in some fashion, then they swap over and Clarrie bowls while Eddie bats. The winner is the one who scores the most runs.
The whole event is a knockout tournament. The winner of Clarrie Vs Eddie progresses to the next round and so on.
Meanwhile, does anyone know where the cricket pitch is? If I recall correctly, it has a pavillion with tea making facilities, so the village green doesn't seem big enough, not to mention the perils of pond and cottage windows.
Can't see it anywhere on the map ...
I believe it's now in the Conutry Park - hence the ceremony to name the Jack Woolley Pavillion - akthough it may have been on the Green many years ago

Thanks all!
Sorry for the delay in replying - I got distracted by work ...
this cleared a few things up for me too, cheers I look forward to it ;0)
This is exactly what I needed. Thank you everybody. I can now sit back and imagine all sorts of pairings.

To add to the other details on the Single Wicket, Harry's blog - kindly reproduced on Jennifer's website - also includes a round up of the rules of the game.
