Which airline allows a ticket to be bought then transferred to a completely different person? How did Fallon use Kentons ticket?
Our company flies people around the world, often Business Class, often changing people at the last minute and inevitably have to purchase new tickets as they are not transferable.
KLM - Is a KLM ticket transferable?
A flight ticket is non-transferable; the only person who can travel with this document is the passenger whose name is printed on it.
Lastminute.com - How do I transfer my ticket into another name?
It is not possible to change the name of the passenger on an airline ticket. The ticket will have to be cancelled and a new ticket will need to be issued. Cancellation penalties will apply.

I think Kathy said they would just have to get the name changed which wouldn't cost much.
I thought this sounded strange at the time.

On a related topic, see Richard Dawkins in yesterday's 'Guardian' letters:
[Dawkins is the 'ticket' in the url, not the bikini or kazoo.]
It's a special airline where the booking staff all have wings and little wands but if you don't believe in them, they die!

So what happens if you buy a ticket and then change your name by deed poll (or similar)?

KLM tickets are definitely non-transferable. You have to submit the original document for refund and buy another. This is the story for every major carrier (I don't know with the easyJet,ryanairs of this world) and, anyway, KLM don't fly to New Zealand.
Gets coat....

The name on the ticket has to match the name on the passport or you won't be allowed to fly and as passports cost about £80 I'd recommend not changing your name until your passport is due for renewal. I'd also recommend booking in the name you intend to have in your passport at the time of travel. If you did have a sudden need to change your name and passport after booking then you would have to pay to have a ticket re-issued in your new name.

I can't see the Ryanairs and easyJets making life simple for travellers... Not without significant costs

What happens if you're buying a ticket as a competition prize and don't know the name of the person who will win?
Get yourself a sponsoring air carrier as most prize flights are donated by the carrier (which is why they are for odd flight times that are not popular with the paying public) so the tickets aren't isued until won. If that's not possible then I suggest a gift token available from most carriers.

Some tickets are transferable - they are just more expensive than non-transferable, names can be changed at a cost.. this may have changed in the last 1-2 years...
KLM don't fly to New ZealandÂ
Yes they do... direct from Schiphol
Kathy & co. went from Birmingham, via Hong Kong & ... (?)

From memory, Easyjet charge £25 per ticket to change a name, and £25 per ticket to change a date, plus half the difference in cost.
Not much good for NZ though. You can buy full fare tickets from the major airlines which you can change like this, but I would doubt these would have been bought in this case, they cost a lot more.
