    Hi everyone,
    My nan keeps talking to me about Phil's funeral, she's looking for the hymns played during the service, I found an extract on youtube but my nan seems to think there were more than one hymn.

    Thankyou

    I think there were three, of which (parts of) two were sung on air: The Lord's My Shepherd, Praise My Soul, and I Vow To Thee My Country.

    Hi

    The two hymns sung at Phil's funeral were 'Praise My Soul The King Of Heaven' and 'The Lord's My Shepherd'.

    "I vow to thee my country" is the one hymn that I as an organist refuse to play, as the words are so chilling and (IMHO) unchristian. I was shocked when I heard Phil had chosen it - I thought better of him till then!

    I'm glad we didn't get to hear it.

    We replaced the organist at our wedding in order to get one who (a) was considerably better than the resident organist, and (b) would play exactly what we wanted.

    "I Vow To Thee" is one of my favourite hymns, and is I think quite "Christian" in outlook - the third verse (below) in particular referring to "another country", namely heaven, and quoting in the last line almost directly from the Bible.

    And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
    Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
    We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
    Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
    And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
    And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

    Perhaps it is the reference to Abraham being willing to sacrifice Isaac that the Plinth objects to?

    That lays upon the altar
    The dearest and the best.

    But he was not required to ultimately MAKE the sacrifice, was he?

    I am so looking forward to being replaced, but it hasn't happened for 30 years!

    There's nothing wrong with the third verse, but unless you've omitted the first verse there's no point in singing it. One will have already surrendered all right to free choice and independent thinking. The killer line is "A love that asks no question". If that is the acceptable, we might as well attend the Nuremburg rallies in a zombie-like trance.

    Sorry perhaps to offend, but this hymn either makes my blood boil or run cold with horror!

    I'd never thought of the Abraham allusion, so thank you for that.
