I keep coming across references to this on the main message board but it's clearly before my time - can someone enlighten me?

When Pat still had a Welsh accent she went off on a "religious retreat". It's so far back my memory is hazy on the details, but I'm sure someone will be along soon with more info.

Thanks Peet, I wondered if it was something to do with John's death, but await further elucidation!

I'm pretty sure we're talking a decade or more before that.

Fairly sure the retreat followed John's death when she had her depression. Think Janet had some role in arranging it

You may have thoughts about when she may or may not have had the affair with Roger her women's study lecturer (mid 80s?). I have a feeling she went away and when she came back Tony said they were going organic and they lived happily ever after

On the one hand, I don’t think it was to do with John, who died in 1998. Pat went walk-a-bout for a couple of weeks in ’79, which happened to be the year Helen was born. Apparently, she returned when she made Tony promise to relax more and not work so much.

She left again in 1980 because of Tony’s drinking but, miraculously, came to his senses.

A couple of years later, she had an affair with Roger Coombes when he was teaching her Women’s Studies, whatever that was, but Richard Adamson’s intervention saved the day.

It becomes more clear why Helen is so disturbed. Her mother tamed her father by using emotional blackmail (do it my way of I leave, effectively) and then rewards his compliance by having an affair.

Pat has proven herself morally bankrupt and has not discouraged her fragile daughter from treading a self deluded path to unhappiness.

And yet I too thought she did breakdown and run away when John died but I do not have any reference books corroborate it. CG does though.

I think it is generally accepted that the "Prestatyn" bit is MB invention, although Pat did (once) go on a retreat somehere.

It isn't clear to me why Pat has to bear all the responsibility for how their children turned out ... what was Tony up to all these years?

Pat went to Wales after Helen was born (1979). She took the children with her and disappeared for 2 weeks to stay with her mother, without giving Tony any advance warning. This looks to be the most likely explanation for the "Prestatyn" reference.
At the time, Pat was showing signs of discontent with her life and began attending meetings at the Women's Peace Group in Borchester, leaving Tony home to babysit.
I'll check with the archivist as I can't find any reference to any visit to a retreat.

    Hi again gillsquared

I've heard back from the archivist who tells me that Pat did go on a retreat in 1999 when she was suffering from depression after John died. Janet recommended a retreat in Wales which Pat then visited.
