... what is the oldest sports venue in continuous use for the same sport in the UK? (Harry's pub quiz question). It's been bugging me and we might not hear the answer on air.
My guess is the St Andrew's golf course -but I am probably way wrong...
It'll be a tiddlywinks stone circle, or a beach where volleyball was first played, I expect, knowing the borer Harry.

Jazzer gave the answer just before Harry's rant.

I wonder if it really is. I'd have thought that one of those Real Tennis cpourts at Hampton Court or Falkland Palace might be as old or older.
The Falkland Palace one is still used occasionally. I've seen a game played on it.

Aren't there cheese rolling contests or similar which take place in various parts of the UK and have done so for centuries on the same piece of land? I suppose it depends on what is meant by sport.
Darts! and getting a horse to kneel down. Draughts. Trivial Pursuits.
‘My guess is the St Andrew's golf course’
‘The Roodee, Chester’
It is an interesting question and one of those with many facets and arguments with no definitive evidence to be totally convincing. It needs further definition.
St Andrews may make a claim as golf is said to have been played there for 600 years but it was not continuous and only got properly established in the 1780s.
Chester Racecourse started officially in 1817.
I would go for Ascot Racecourse which started in 1711, although I am unsure whether racing was held during WWII.
I’m in a pub quiz tonight and hope it doesn’t get asked otherwise we’ll be there arguing all night.
Epsom. The first record of a race taking place on the Epsom commons dates back to 1661

So glad to see this raised in N and Q. Like Reggie Trentham up-thread, I wondered if it was Hampton Court Real Tennis. According to the real tennis website, tennis was played there by Henry VIII from 1528. Not sure if it has been payed there continuously though? Would love to know the correct answer to this question!

Well, some fascinating answers - thanks all. I didn't realise Jazzer actually answered it on air. I'll have to LA v carefully to catch what he said....

Well according to the all-knowing Wikipedia the earliest recorded horse race at the Roodee was in 1539.
