I know ML regularly discusses who has been awol however I wondered if there was a rota for characters appearing or does it just depend on storylines. I think the actors (sorry villagers)are freelance so I guess are paid on appearances. Apols if this has been asked before.

There is no rota but I think over the long term the writers like to try to use the main characters equally.

While searching the net for something else, by chance I came across a Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú document which says that Archers actors are paid between £223-£255, but I'm not sure whether that's per hour's work or per episode. Cast members with over 30 years service get an extra £10 per episode. It also says an episode takes about 2 hours 15 minutes to record.

I believe that in the 'old days' - maybe up to the 70's or early 80's there was a regular core of actors who were in it pretty much all the time. Now, I think it's all done on the basis of getting only the cast they need for the monthly recording sessions. That's why we suddenly get a month of 'Peggy' or 'Jill' of 'Mat and Lillian' because they are in for the two or so days that it takes to record the programme in advance. I also heard that they are only paid for studio time, not for rehearsal time, but I may be out of date or wrong about that.

    Hi all

There's some details in the FAQs here

The actors are contracted and many have other work commitments.

Sometimes it's a bit of a juggling job for the scriptwriters when an actor isn't available and they're involved in a storyline!

Oh. We'd been told - at least, as I understood it - that none of the actors is contracted on an ongoing basis, but that they're on short-term contracts for the recording sessions they're involved in. Has this changed, or did I misunderstand something?

What's the definition of 'short term contract'? Heard Peggy on D.I. Discs a few weeks' ago, and apparently she's been giving her all for half a century.
In passing, so sorry she no longer likes her cats; I've seriously gone off her now. Maybe Joeleen could rehouse them, & bring some joy into her life. Assuming Kenton doesn't step up to the bar with an offer she can't refuse ...

    Hi Badge and sue beer

Just got a bit more detail on the actors' contracts. They're contracted per episode and are booked to do particular episodes in a 6 day recording session - this covers one month of transmissions. They are booked about a month in advance of the studio. There is no guarantee that they will be booked in a particular session, or indeed any guarantee that they will be booked after that but this does allow maximum flexibility for the actors as well. If they have other work, or commitments they let the team know in advance so they don't think about casting them in particular studios. Occasionally exceptions are made to this rule, but generally this is how it works month by month.
One scenario that springs to mind was when Helen Monks - the actress playing Pip - had her big Jude storyline just ahead of the time she was to sit her exams. The writers had to work around her not being available then.

Thanks, Tayler Tayler. I thought it was something along those lines, but it's good to have the details.
