Does anyone know how Shula and Kenton came to be given their very unusual names?

‘Does anyone know how Shula and Kenton came to be given their very unusual names?’

This subject is not normally discussed in public but it is well known amongst an inner circle that Kenton got his name from the hamlet of the same name where Phil and Jill stayed for their honeymoon in The Plough public house, first opened in the early 18th century.

Its origin comes from the personal name of the Saxon Coena and the Old English tun, a farm – and it means the farm of Coena and his family who once lived on a site near there.

Phil thought it appropriate as he was also a farmer and Jill just liked it.

The reason for Shula is less well known, save for a few people who had access to the facts, which cannot, for obvious reasons, be made available to the public.

It was incontrovertibly chosen by Jill when she had a crush on the American football cornerback and coach Donald "Don" Shula (born January 4, 1930).

Don is best known as coach of the Miami Dolphins. He was born in Grand River, Ohio and grew up in suburban Cleveland, which Jill thought sounded most romantic when compared with her life around Ambridge. Jill first saw his picture in the Case Western Reserve University Campus magazine in 1954 when he earned a Master of Arts degree in Physical Education. She thought he was amazingly handsome and physically attractive, compared with Phil, and kept his picture close for years after they married.

She just told a puzzled Phil that she had read the name but was unable to remember where.

Phil readily agreed, which some people thought strange, but he would have known the name for some years following his academic study of Arabic, where the name means flaming or bright.

However, when he confided in his brother Jack, following a rowdy night in the Bull, he revealed that it was imprinted in his mind from his Sunday School days as it is a Hebrew name (short form of Shulamit). It is a biblical name and can be translated as peaceful, a state which Phil sought all of his life.

Unfortunately, what he did not know was that the original meaning is something different: the Hebrew shallem means pay for, replace, complete and names like Salomon or Salome were originally given to a child whose elder brother or sister had died. The choice was to bring much sorrow and anguish to the family.

Jill, of course, offers an entirely unbelievable explanation, from which she has never wavered even under the most intense questioning, and her implausible waffle can be found by starting at the Home page and looking at the available information.

I hope you find this helpful but must ask that you do not re-publish the information on the outside for fear of the consequence amongst the wider listener base.

I had heard the same explanations from elsewhere Seveek but in less detail.

    Thank you

I did enjoy that answer Seveek!

Perhaps the answer lies in point 10 here:

Is this MB always so geeky and "in" ?!! Noticeably unhelpful to the original poster. Isn't Shula named after a Scottish island?

Welcome to the MB, Mak. You have just witnessed one of the ancient traditions of Mustardland.
