Does anyone remember who gave birth to a baby with Downs syndrome or perhaps a hare lip? I just remember a very touching episode when Eddie Grundy saw the baby and said it was beautiful becuase the mother was worried what the reaction to her baby might be.
Christopher Carter was born with a harelip.
They had advice in the storyline of his birth from CLAPA (cleft lip and palate association) I think.

(From The Book of The Archers) Susan was horrified that her baby had been born with a unilateral cleft palate and hare lip. It wasn't until Chris had a successful operation on his palate that Susan could bring herself to wheel him round the village.

The Downs reference you're thinking of was a pregnant Jenny saying 'Oh, I can't possibly have a Downs baby as the Carter's have just have a baby with a harelip.' Of course she didn't (and the naturally beautiful baby grew up to marry Chris Carter!), but the lack of understanding of probability theory on Jenny's part stuck in my head!

When I first had my Down's child, I went to a meeting with the local DS Society. Someone from head office told us that The programme makers of the Archers had asked about babies with DS, when Jenny and Susan Carter were both pregnant (and I think someone else, but I can't recall who). They eventually settled an a cleft palate story, but the story line with DS was definitely investigated.

There was a lot of discussion around Downs when Jenny was expecting Alice - I think she ended up taking part in a pilot use of amniocentesis
