I emailed someone working in the RNIB about the vision-related problems suffered by many using this new board layout/design, and the fact that the response has been that it "meets accessibility" requirements.
The person I emailed passed the query long and this is the quoted text I was then sent - I am assuming this is from another RNIB person!
"First off I'd advise people power needs to be applied here and one way
to do this is to post up messages on the forum encouraging people to
complain about their problems and symptoms to Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Radio 4 'Feedback'
programme, who investigate and report this sort of thing.
Second have to admit I'm slightly perplexed why the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú would claim,
given the feedback, that their new design meets accessibility standards,
perhaps it does in one technical sense, but people are more important
than simply applying standards.
So I'd advise Laura seeks out a response from the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú on what level and
extent of 'user acceptance testing' was performed on the beta version of
the site, whether any of these issues came up during this phase in the
development, what if anything was adjusted in response / if no issues
were identified could they explain why significant negative feedback is
so evident now?"
I hope this helps.
So - everyone with headaches, nausea, wrist-pain, etc., if we can all contact Feedback within this next week, giving the web-address of ML, and asking about the level and extent of 'user acceptance testing', etc.
Fingers crossed - I hate to leave after nearly a decade and there is a weird feeling of loss for me...

Laura, I hope you don't mind but I'm going to put a link to this in the Bull so more people will see it.

Hi Laura, and thanks Vicky for signposting this post. Do the RNIB not give advice/guidance about fonts, colour schemes, layout, features etc.? And why isn't the Beeb, of all 'people' not front and centre on this?

Thanks, Laura.
why isn't the Beeb, of all 'people' not front and centre on this?Â
Well, according to this Ouch Blog post (Feb 5th 2010), they are:
Some titbits:
"The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú are about to launch a whizzy new accessibility tool across the whole of its website. It'll make bbc.co.uk easier to read and navigate. [...]
Much of the Ouch website already has a control panel at the top of the page that enables you to change colours and font size to make it as easy to read as possible. But this new control panel will be rolled out across the entire Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú website - from messageboards to news and iPlayer so you can personalise everything. The guys in the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Usability & Accessibility Team have been working hard on this for a while now, testing it vigorously with all 'flavours' of disabled people.
The Ouch! team had a quick demo of the prototype tool today and it looks great. It lets you set preferences for text size, spacing, font, foreground, background and link colours. It can convert multiple-column pages into one single column. And it uses preset themes to allow you to do personalisations like this with the minimum of mouse clicks. [...]
It looks like its going to help a lot of users - especially those with Lo-vision, Asperger's, Dyslexia, ADHD, or those who find text hard to read - when it launches in the next few months."
So, is the problem at the moment that they can't implement the tool across the boards (yet) - in which case, why not just say so?
Or have they changed their minds and decided to abandon the whole idea/restrict to one small section of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú site only, i.e. the OUCH! Disability boards. Again, in which case, why not just say so?

Hmm. Again an interesting link. Thanks.
There's certainly no evidence of the 3 font sizes and 4 colour combinations that THAT seems to amount to here, is there? I think posters are demanding more than that: width of bog-roll, slider for just the bog roll, catch-up button, and an edit function for the 'my discussions' page for starters.

Hi! Laura. I wrote this to Tyler in an email because what I cannot 'do' is hunt down a post to find either my last contribution ( or someone else's ) so I can reply appropriately.
OH is absolutely sure he read of the phenomenon but cannot find where.
At first I thought the extra scrolling only involved my hand ( having been a long term script user I was really into clicking directly from one place to another using 'catch up') but having used different methods for scrolling and tweaking the colour and font size I thought I was OK. Then I noticed I was getting the sort of headache I got when I was searching old newspapers on microfiche bad enough to cause me to give up that line of research.
I mentioned it to my OH (also an occasional poster) and he reminded me of a story of during WW2 when the workers in a munitions factory kept fainting when they were near a machine which was stamping something out and a horizontal bar kept coming down in their line of sight. When the machine was redesigned so there was no longer a moving horizontal bar, no one fainted. Could the bars between the posts be producing the unwanted effect given that many of us are doing more scrolling in order to read the long posts or 'find our place'? I know that one anecdote does not make a diagnosis, but I offer you this to add to the body of knowledge in case some alterations can be made.
Meanwhile I can only post once or twice a day and have to scroll with my eyes closed so I am finding it hard to follow the sense of the threads and I am missing the news of the many cyber friends I have made over the last 7 years!
I will send it to "Feedback" too. SFAnneâ„¢

Laura
I have contacted Feedback as you suggested, and encouraged others I know in RL to do the same.

I did too. Hopefully they'll research it and do a piece on it. Next week's the last broadcast for a while though, so to get a response we'd need to be send lots of messages quickly

There have been many complaints about the changes to the message boards from all corners of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú.
There is a petition running against the changes over on the Points Of View board:
Please feel free to add your complaints there too in order to get something done about the situation.

The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Blog about the mesageboard 'improvements' is here for any one interested, note the very many comments from users:
You may also be interested in a blog from Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú

I added a comment and must admit I found what I read incredulous.
The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú author stating
I chaired the committee who created the standard, and acted as its lead author.Â
I hope those attending his sell out bash will include persons with first hand experience of the before and after sate of the messageboards
BS8878 will be launched on Tuesday December 7th at a free (but sold-out) event in London. Â

RNIB do provide loads of free info about accessible web design: www.rnib.org.uk/wac. They also have a team of consultants who can be hired to provide website-specific advice and auditing.

Thanks for posting that link, Verity - very interesting indeed. I've bookmarked it and will certainly refer to it when I build another website. : )

I did mean to complain about the discussion button not being on the front page but then got so annoyed at looking at the glaring white page I gave up looking to see if anyone else was complaining.
Having now read the situation regarding this NOW AWFUL website, though not a regular poster, I now will never bother again.
Hopefully who ever designed this website will be in the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú cutbacks
