In 1950 I lived in Gloucestershire and we got the Midland Home service - I heard all the episodes of the Whitsun pilot and thought it had gone away. I was also a Dick Barton fan - they used to occupy the 6-45 pm slot and during the summer another programme was aired. In Summer 1950 it was The Daring Dexters as I recall. But I also recall that when I was expecting Dick Barton to return in September 1950 it was the Archers again instead. So where did the ist Jan 1951 come from?
Not sure what went on in the Midlands in September, but I think broadcasting The Archers to the nation started in January 1951, hence that being used as the annniversary date
