When Shula was telling Tony (and then he Helen) she (and then he) acted as if he and Pat would be devastated to hear of Nigel's death. Was this just because Nigel is a nice guy they have all known for years, or is he somehow related to Tony's family via marriage to Elizabeth?
I have tried looking at the various parts of the family tree, but I admit I still barely grasp how all these people are related. As a secondary question, how are the Archers and Aldridges related, if at all? Could we have a massive family tree which goes back far enough to show the links between these seemingly unrelated branches of the family?

They are cousins. Their fathers, Phil and Jack Archer, were brothers and sons of Dan and Doris.

That's Elizabeth and Tony btw.
In answer to the second part of your question Jennifer is and Archer by birth. Jack's daughterand Tony's sister, as is Lillian, so cousin to Shula, Kenton, David and Elizabeth.

Peggy (formerly Archer) was Phil Archer's sister-in-law. Phil and Jack were the sons of Dan and Doris.
Thus Jennifer, Lilian and Tony are the cousins of Shula and Kenton, David and Elizabeth.
Adam, Debbie, Kate and Alice are cousins of Tom and Helen and second cousins of Daniel, Lily and Freddy (or first cousins once removed if you prefer that style).

I thought in fact that it was strange that the Bridge Farm people went to the LL party but not the Home Farm ones, they are just as close family.
Maybe they wanted to spend the night in with Ruairi?

No, a dog.

Tess and David are the children of Clarrie's sister, Rosie, who married a chap called Dennis. (except I thought she was Bess, not Tess)

So what was the name of the dog they couldn't take to Meadowrise and left at Brookfield?

The Grundy dog was of course called tess, but she did not appear on the family tree, peggy.
Tess and David Mabbot do appear on the family tree, although it should be Bess and David.
Which was the query.

"Adam, Debbie, Kate and Alice are cousins of Tom and Helen and second cousins of Daniel, Lily and Freddy (or first cousins once removed if you prefer that style)."
The bit in brackets is misleading - yes, Tom, Helen etc are indeed second cousins of Daniel, Josh etc, but "first cousins once removed" ihey are not as this is not an alternative name to "second cousin". Tom and Helen are first cousins once removed to Shula and Elizabeth, as they are one generation apart. Henry Ian is a first cousin twice removed to Shula and Elizabeth. If Phoebe has a child in a few years time that child will be a first cousin three times removed to Shula. However, any grandchild Shula may have will be a third cousin to Phoebe, because Phoebe is grandchild of Shula's first cousin Jennifer, and they thus belong to the same generation. Clear?

"first cousins once removed" they are not as this is not an alternative name to "second cousin"Â
Much confusion is engendered by the fact that different people use these terms to mean different things. Web references tend to cite US soures and in general they're keener on "rules".
But if you do genealogy you'll find it's not so simple.
But as you like.

If you want to start getting into really complicated relationships consider this. Any children that Brenda and Tom have will be first cousins to both Phoebe and Abbie, because Brenda and Roy are siblings. But they will also be Phoebe's second cousins, but not Abbie's, because they are the children of first cousins, Kate and Tom. In addition whilst Ruairi is Phoebe's uncle he has no genetic relationship to Abbie or Brenda and Tom's putative offspring.
Now go and sit in a darkened room with an ice pack on your head.

Brilliant!
However: "Ruairi is Phoebe's uncle"
Half-uncle, don't you mean.....?
