Can someone tell me, starting with Helen, how these two are related?
I was thinking about the bit in the hospital when Pat tried to keep the bad news from Helen, and i wondered just how closly related they were. Here's my stab at it:
Helen. Tony. Peggy. Peggy's first husband Jack? Jack's brother Dan Archer (not dure about this bit). Phil. Elizabeth. Elizabeth's husband.
Thanks in a dance.

Dan Archer has two sons, Jack and Phil. (Was there a third? Never mind.) Jennifer, Lilian and Tony are Jack's children. Shula, Kenton, David and Elizabeth are Phil's children. Elizabeth and Tony are first cousins. Elizabeth and Helen are first cousins once removed. Lily 'n Freddie are Helen's second cousins.
I suppose that makes Nigel Helen's first cousin once removed-in-law.
Dan and Doris had a daughter, Christine. She is still alive and living in Ambridge but usually is a 'silent' character.
Here's a link to a similar discussion a bit further down the page:
Janie, you may be thinking of Ben, Dan's brother who emigrated to New Zealand (why do they all go to New Zealand and not Australia?). He married Laura (Aunt Laura).
Chris was last heard when she, Peggy and Jill discovered Phils body.
I meant that Chris is a 'silent' character in that she is sometimes referred to but only infrequently heard. I find her absence does not make any sense at all. She is excluded from family gatherings and seems to be left alone most of the time. As the only living child of Dan and Doris she should be the titular head of the family. She used to be good friends with Jill and Shula but now seems to spend her widowhood in her cottage.
Yes, "silent characters" is usually referring to people like Titcombe, (the late) Pru Forrest, N Booth and Sabrina (we did hear a meow this time) who have never spoken, but are just leaving or are in the distance, etc.
Christine is therefore not "silent" in the conventional TA sense, just not been in it for a while - like Clive Horrobin and Lucy Perks !

Yes, very surprised not to hear from Christine in the 60th anniversary episode. Far more fitting to have a few raised glasses to the baby and some reminisences from Peggy and Christine (the only surviovors from the early 50s) than the outrage we were subjected to!
I agree with all this real world misery why can't the Archers do what it should do - spread a little cheer.
#2. thank you very much for that.
It must have been a devil for Helen to get a birthday card addressed to her "first cousin once removed-in-law"!

Christine has 'a bad back', which prevents her doing most things as we all know bad backs do. SFAnneâ„¢

She's not really left alone, is she? She went to Bath for Jill's 80th birthday with the rest of the family, and don't forget that when Phil died, she had been out for the day with Jill and Peggy. In fact, I'd say the three of them are quite close, especially since Jill became a widow. Just because we don't hear about her that often doesn't mean she's not involved.
Though I agree, I was disappointed that neither Chris nor Peggy appeared during the 60th episodes.

"silent characters" is usually referring to people like ....Pru Forrest.......
Christine is therefore not "silent" in the conventional TA senseÂ
Just as a matter of historical accuracy Pru wasn't a 'silent' in the conventional sense either. She was a speaking character right up until she went into a home. What listener who heard the programme in those days can forget her cry of 'oh Tom'. In fact her speaking character was revived many years later, and not very sucessfully imo, by Judy Dench*.
*I'm almost certain it was Judy Dench, definitely a famour actress.
It was Judy Dench and for one episode only.
