I am a more regular reader of this board than I am a poster, but I find the problem of 'catpeeing' depressing and irritating.

Is it that this part of the House Rules:

"We reserve the right to fail messages which: Are considered likely to disrupt, provoke, attack or offend others"

is so badly written that it can apply to anything but the cosiest of posts? Are posts deleted simply because someone has said they're offended by them?

How is 'disrupt, provoke, attack or offend' defined? It seems to be weak and ill-worded, especially when the rest of the rules already cover swearing, and "racist, sexist, homophobic, sexually explicit, abusive or otherwise objectionable" content. What else is left to be covered by the rule quoted above?

It seems that either the moderators are a little too sensitive, and trying to keep the Board in a Stepford state where no one can directly criticise anyone else, or simply not checking the posts properly.

Having previously worked as a moderator on another message board, I am genuinely curious.

The short answer to is no! But this board is reactively moderated, which means that we don't check every post (it would make the message board far too costly to manage!) but we do rely on posters to alert the moderators to posts that may be offensive or against the house rules for some reason.

These posts are checked by moderators before they're hidden/removed or referred to the hosts. There are detailed guidelines for moderators and hosts, and I think you'll see from the posts here that this board is hardly "Stepford-like"!

There's plenty more information about the process here if you're interested:

Okay, that really didn't answer my question, as I'm now seeing inoffensive posts in by Brian-of-Britain in DTA being deleted before my very eyes!

    What is going on?

I'm surprised that more posts haven't been modded. I have been horrified by the transformation of DTA into a bubbling cauldron of vitriol since the SATTC.
