In the Gillian Reynolds article in the Telegraph today
, she says "Be warned, however. If threats to originate The Archers on what is now Radio 7 (but will soon be relaunched as 4-Xtra) prove true..."
Is there any truth behind this rumour, please?

Surely hardly anyone who would listen to Radio 4 would spell it "Xtra" ?? out of choice ...

It is a rumour, but seemingly well-founded within the radio business. The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú needs a big 'come-on' when 4Xtra gets 'launched'.

Hi carrick
There were rumours earlier this year that The Archers might be broadcast on 4-extra (or whatever it'll be called) ahead of broadcasts on Radio 4. I remember the reports as my first thought was about the message board and what might constitute a spoiler if this went ahead!!
As far as I know, there are no definite plans for this (I'd imagine if plans were going ahead, it would be in the article), but I'll ask and see if there are any other details about it.

Tayler - I doubt whether you'll find out any definitive before the Trust has issued its R3/4/7 report later this month and the Execs have had a chance to see whether their plans can fly.
Who do you ask, btw, if that's not a confidential question?

Hi Russ,
In this instance I've emailed one of the producers at the Beeb to see if they know or know who to ask!

Thanks, Tayler, but I suspect the decision is above producer level. I guess Tim Davie will make the call.
Gwynneth Williams appears on Feedback on 28 Jan, but I think most of the programme might already be in the can.

Sorry, GMA - I won't do it again.

Tayler, can you point out to them that if they "originate" TA a day early on 4Xtra, then they will forever put an end to "on the day" topical inserts. That's not a good thing.

Hi all
An unequivocal response for you - "We can be quite clear about this. We aren't going to originate The Archers on Radio 4 Extra."

What does " to originate" mean?

Hi Sallyruth
In this case "to originate" means broadcasting it there first.

Thanks, Tayler! You're a star!
(I have to admit I thought about TA and spoilers, too!)

Thank you.
Why don't they SAY that, then?

They did. Originate is a perfectly good verb in my Concise English Oxford Dictionary, copyright 1964. Dates back to 17th century.

I should hope so to. If TA originated on digital radio, people like me who have a life but not an expensive digital radio simply wouldn't watch, in a similar way to football only available for a fee on Sky is now only followed by total geeks who know the sock size of everybody who played for Everton from the 1970-71 season onwards

What is Radio 4 Extra, anyway? What will be on it?
"The Tomorrow Programme"?
"On a cushion just in front of the Front Row"?
"I'm Sorry, I Never Had a Clue in the First Place"
"Woman's 90 Minutes"?

But I don't go back to the 17th century.
It seems daft to me, to start using long words, but I must be the wrong sort of person, you always seem to answer me rudely.

SR, being a pedant, "broadcasting it there first" is a lot more words, and "broadcasting" is longer than "originating".

I often answer posts briefly with just information. It is not intended to be rude.
I have been reading the word originate/origination in Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú schedules for years so I'm surprised people are suddenly querying it.
