Answers to many common questions about this message board – for example: 'Why is it called Mustardland?' 'Where did Shula and Kenton get their names?' 'How do I quote text from others' posts?' – can be found in the Archers message board FAQs.
If you have a question which isn't covered by the FAQ section, then of course feel free to ask other posters here.

The link to the thread about jont & Achilles' new script: "Proteus - designed to improve the layout of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú DNA message boards and add various other benefits" is here:

To find the FAQ section from any page on this website, if you don't have the link to hand, click on 'About' from the menu at the top of the screen, and then on 'Message board FAQs' in the 'More information' box on the right. If you click on 'FAQs' in the Messageboard menu to the left, you'll be taken to some Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú-side FAQs.

You're right, it isn't. That's rather curt (and impolite). I have problems with it too .
Thanks for this, Tayler. However, I thought that you were going to update Mike's Laws of Mustardland with a few more suggested ones, including my suggestion that every few weeks someone hopes that TA will soon be getting its first lesbian and speculates who that might be (very often Hellin). I know you're busy but I hope that this is still on your "to do" list.

Hi NSTT
Yes, it is still on my list, though I'm not sure exactly when I'll get round to it! : )

Any news on fixing the FAQs, Tayler? I've pretty much given up/lost interest, to be honest, but seeing as my name is still embarrassingly stuck at the top of them, I thought I'd ask.

Hi Badge
I'll see if I can devote some time to it this week : )
Tayler
Thanks, Tayler. If the missing sections can't be reinstated and other problems fixed, it might be best just to remove the FAQs completely. I'm not sure how often they're referred to now. Don't often see people asking about them on the board. Do you have any figures for visits to the FAQ pages?

I don't have figures Badge, but it's not a bad idea to find out. I'll get on to the team.
Thanks
Tayler
Tayler, I remember you saying that you wouldn't start up the email exchange service which Keri had done but later abandoned. However I've just seen Windfarm Mermaid say that you have many times performed this service for her:
If this is the case, it's probably worth reinserting that into the bit about exchanging email addresses so that everyone knows this service is now available again.
Best wishes,

Can someone tell me if this email I received is for real please
I've put it on here as I can't find anywhere else to put it
Dear H2G2 User,
We are writing with some important information about your H2G2 account.
As you may know, the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú intends to transfer ownership of the H2G2 website. The good news is the proposed new owner is the H2G2 Group chaired by Robbie Stamp, one of the original founders of H2G2 and a great friend of Douglas Adams. If you are happy for the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú to pass on your email address to the new owner so they can invite you to re-join H2G2 after it has left the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú, then please do absolutely nothing! The H2G2 Group will be in touch in due course.
However, if you do not want the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú to pass on your email address please click this link. If we do not hear from you within 20 working days of the date we sent this email, we will assume that you would like to be contacted by the new owner.
Kind regards,
Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Social Media
Yes, it is. Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú is separating and selling h2g2. Since they bought h2g2 some years ago in order to run their message boards on its software, everyone who signed up for Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú message boards/blogs and so on has had an h2g2 account created as part of their Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú log-in. However, h2g2 is a dicrete community in its own right. It also has a sort of encyclopaedic knowledge base, of the type now popularised by Wikipedia and so on.
One of the functions of h2g2 most commonly used by people who use Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú message boards is to unsubscribe from threads. However this can be done without going to h2g2 - see the instructions in the post below.
If you don't want to use the wider aspects of h2g2 (community, knowledge base and so on) you won't need an account with h2g2 when it is sold by the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú, so you can click the link on the email. If, however, you wish to take part in h2g2 after it has been sold, do nothing and your existing h2g2 account will be transferred to the new organisation, along with the details you gave the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú when you created this account (email address and so on).
There's nothing dodgy about this - it's simply letting you know what will happen when this part of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú is sold, and giving you the chance to decide what to do.

How to unsubscribe from threads:
1. Copy the following text to your clipboard (ctrl-C): &cmd=unsubscribethread
2. Open each thread you want to delete in a new tab. Paste the above text on the end of the URL in the URL bar.
(NB: you need to add the &cmd=unsubscribethread immediately after the thread number, i.e. '?thread=nnnnnnn'. You can do this from any page on the thread, but you need to delete all the gubbins in the URL after the thread number before, or at the same time as, pasting the unsubscribethread command.)
3. Press Enter.
4. When the thread reloads, you should have been unsubscribed from it.
5. Close the tab and go back to your discussions list, and repeat the process for the next thread.
The advantage of opening each thread you want to delete in a separate tab is that when you close the tab after unsubscribing, you won't need to reload or re-navigate to your discussions list.

&cmd=unsubscribethread
is all very well but it take ages, why can't they have a simpler system, such as a little box that you can tick on each of the threads on "my discussion" with a delete all tag at the top,the same as you get on emails.
why is it so complicated?

Of course, Primmers, using the instructions in message 23, you can bookmark (ie subscribe to) a thread without posting on it. Not telling you off, just pointing out something you might not have realised you could do.

Thank you for all the help, lovely Badgey.
But,
Since I fell at the first hurdle, as I don't know where my 'clipboard' is, I have decided to stay in H2G2 so I can continue to just click the 'unsubscribe' cross.
Your 'clipboard' is the notional bit of your computer's memory in which copied text is stored. All it means is copy the text (Edit -> Copy or Ctrl-C) and then paste it (Edit -> Paste or Ctrl-V). The text copied is held in the 'clipboard' so that the computer can remember what the text is when you decide to paste it. That's all. Does that make sense?
I assumed everyone would have come across the word in instances such as if you've copied a large amount of text in is Microsoft Word and then have quit the programme, it pops up a message saying something like 'do you wish to keep this text in your clipboard?' And of course the word is used a lot in the (f) manual...... Apologies for the confusion.

How to unsubscribe from threads:
1. Copy the following text to your clipboard (ctrl-C): &cmd=unsubscribethread Â
What's a clipboard? How can I get to it from my desktop?
I HAVE used H2G2 to get rid of old/unwanted conversations and it will be a darn nuisance to have to go outside the bbc to do this - it's been bad enough as it is.
WHY can't we just have an Unsubscribe/Delete button to press on The Archers Messageboard itself? It would be a lot simpler than the current or possible future arrangement.

Hi MidgetGemAgain
It's possible that there will be a button to unsubscribe from threads on this site in future. It's being looked in to.
You won't be able to use H2G2 to unsubscribe from threads once the sale goes through as there will no longer be a link with this site.
To unsubscribe from a thread, click on the thread title from the menu page and add:
&cmd=unsubscribethread
immediately after the thread number in the address bar at the top of your browser, so it looks like this at the end:
.../NF2693940?thread=8256973&cmd=unsubscribethread
That will remove a thread from Your Discussions.
Tayler
WHY can't we just have an Unsubscribe/Delete button to press on The Archers Messageboard itself?Â
In case you are not aware, you can have subscribe/unsubscribe buttons (amongst lots of other good things) if you use the Proteus script:
How to unsubscribe from threads:
1. Copy the following text to your clipboard (ctrl-C): &cmd=unsubscribethread
2. Open each thread you want to delete in a new tab. Paste the above text on the end of the URL in the URL bar.
(NB: you need to add the &cmd=unsubscribethread immediately after the thread number, i.e. '?thread=nnnnnnn'. You can do this from any page on the thread, but you need to delete all the gubbins in the URL after the thread number before, or at the same time as, pasting the unsubscribethread command.)

Hi Tayler
Your post of 26 July last year said...........
"It's possible that there will be a button to unsubscribe from threads on this site in future. It's being looked in to."
Can you tell me what is happening about this. It is the most enormously cumbersome system at the moment.

PS Yes I do know about the Script but can't get used to it. Nor indeed do I feel I should have to!

Peter, I don't wish to make you blush, but have a look just about the first post in this thread, on the right.
Any thread you are subscribed to has an 'Unsubscribe from this thread' link, and any thread to which you are not subscribed has a 'Subscribe from this thread' link, so you can subscribe to a thread without posting on it.

Addendum to queries about quoting. I know how to quote, but I have vague memories that it's possible to say when quoting who you're quoting from (if you see what I mean). For example:
Quote: Anglo-Norman
"Blah-di-blah-do-blah"
Not very important, but I just wrote a message quoting more than one person but, the high intelligence of most Mustardlanders not withstanding, it might have been useful to say who had said what. Of course, one could just say so, but I was wondering if that function ever existed, and if so, how it's done.
I think that was an inherent function of the old messageboard software, but I may be wrong.
I'd like to know how to include a quote within a quote when replying to a post with a quote box already in it.. If I just highlight everything and press the' insert <quote postid' box it just looks as if it's one quote. I hope this makes sense and that someone can help.
I know there was a thread some time ago with people making pretty patterns with quote boxes but I wasn't paying close attention and I didn't bookmark.
I have the Script.
You mean like this?
Yack yack
²ú³Ü°ù²ú±ô±ðÌý
²ú±ô²¹³ó-²ú±ô²¹³óÌý
Just type < quote > whatever-you're-quoting < quote > extra-quote < / quote > rest-of-main-quote < / quote >
But without the gaps between the < , / and 'quote', so it should come out as:
whatever-you're-quoting
extra-quote Â
rest-of-main-quote Â
In other words, just do a manual quote as normal, but within the main quote. Hope that makes sense.
whatever-you're-quoting Â
Just type < quote > whatever-you're-quoting < quote > extra-quote < / quote > rest-of-main-quote < / quote >Â
Yay! thank you very much, Anglo-Norman. I thought it was far more complicated.
I thought it was far more complicated.Â
Apparently it was!
