This reason for this, and the choosing of threads, has come up time and time again on this forum. Could we have a response from whoever manages this board?
Please.
I've been banging on about this for weeks, Bette. Tayler said a couple of weeks ago that she would get back to me when someone-or-other got back to her, but we are both (I assume) still waiting...

Hi Bette and moominllama
I haven't heard back yet. Sorry! I'll get in touch with them again about it.

This morning it's led to the delightful phenomenon of a thread in DTA entitled
Caro & Ollie
appearing in the Recent Discussions as
Caro & amp. Ollie
For some reason the computer has decided that it needs to abbreviate the word "ampersand" next to the symbol for same.

I get the impression, from a cursory look at some of the threads in the list, that there is some piece of software that selects the first five threads posted after midnight. It seems a bit of a pointless excerise just to choose threads to highlight, in this manner and anyway, if you are going to do something like that, the middle of the night isn't the best time to do it.
I did think of staying up late one night to test my theory out but I'm really not that obsessive.
Interesting hypothesis, Reggie.
Sady, I *am* that obsessive and may well stay up late one of these nights to subject it to rigorous testing...

Yeah, well, I was a bit miffed to find a thread I had posted around that time (and didn't merit much response) should end up on 'Recent discussions'! I think I posted this thread in frustration, actually!
C'mon robot, put the 'Magickal Babe' thread on the Recent Difcuffionf board - it deserves it!

Are you sure it didn't read 'Caro & Ollie'?
This would make sense as a glitch, as in HTML symbols are created by codes placed between an ampersand and a semi-colon, so to produce an ampersand on a web page, you need the code '&'. In the same way, a < is '<'. So if the Recent discussions list was displaying the source code, this would make sense.
Still a cock-up, though. As indeed the entire concept of the Recent discussions seems to be.

I can't remember Badgey; you're probably right.
I knew somebody would know how or why it happened.
It gets worse. The current five have nothing to do with a programme or the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú.
• A single national identity?
A political post
• Who do you sleep with?
Poor chap who snores
• Valentine fiasco
A lady who worries about her son buying a Valentine’s present.
• The only way we'd all get on would be..
A phylisophical discussion about how aliens may help us to get on better
• Decimalisation
A lady remembers decimalisation but did not realise how long ago.
And now Elt has said sorry on Radio 2.
I am *so* grateful to Recent Discussions for making me aware of this...

At least the 5 listed in msg 11 are threads with good participation and reasonably representative of the board.
Sk
OTOH, threads with good participation float to the top, or stay on the front page, so easier to 'catch' anyway.

I only meant it wasn't quite as unfortunate a choice as usual!
It would be better picked by a human so that there was a good spread of topics from a range of board areas (probably best to leave out TVH and Spoilers) and there was nothing hidden or posted by trolls.
sk
Oh, I agree!
As it is at the moment, RD is a total waste of space. The only thing I like about it is that the threads are cross-topic (ie mix up DtA, TB, TVH, N&Q). I think it /might/ just work if the list were to be hand-picked, and for the list to be changed very often (say at least twice a day).

Hoorah, the "& amp;" is back again today!
I wonder whether, in years to come, when the "recent discussions" list is a dim and distant memory, we will be saying nostalgically "Ah...remember the good old & amp;?"

One of these days I'm going to get up very early in the morning and post 5 variants of '& amp', just to see how many of them get on the RD board.

Ooh yes....good idea.
Suggested thread titles for you:
"Volts & amp; amps--how is your electricity consumption?" in TB.
"The lady & amp; the tramp--Lizzie's walk around her estate" in DTA.
