Am puzzled by the layout of Helen's flat. I am sure this has probably been discussed before but I need a reminder please.

It's referred to as being cosy - read small. Pat said earlier in the week, if Helen needs anything she can just pop "down" to the shop. But when on the day of the great flusterings (impendig Health Visitor visting/JD arriving with a mere vennison casserole/still in pajamas drama) there seemed to be no climbing of stairsand much "come through Aunty Jennifer" and "let's go through to the other room" - ing, which would imply everything is on one level.

And, slightly off topic, why did JD exclaim (in rather OTT fashion IMO) "oh, I didn't know you had visitors". Why would she know? Does she expect a hanky to be hung on the door knob thus indicating company? There's no driveway to a reveal a visiting vehicle. Why the surprise?

    Niggle over.

I agree with your niggles, but can't say anything sensible about the size of Helens flat.

This thread is a not-very-serious exploration of it -

Wouldn't it be a bit boring and a waste of airtime if every time some one rang Helen's doorbell we had to hear them trudging up her stairs? Or maybe it could become the new change counting.

As for Jennifer's remark about not knowing she had visitors, it's just one of those things that people say to oil the wheels of social intercourse. It's what linguists call phatic communication.

I should say, 'students of linguistics'. Got to be careful on a subject like that in case the grammar police are on patrol.

I assumed an outside stair, at the back of the shop, up which visitors would trudge before ringing the bell at the door. I suppose there might also be an internal stair down to the shop but that would be odd when the flat and the shop are two separate entities and no longer connected. And would anyone want Helen alone with direct access to the PO and the comsetibles?

Very infradig for an Archer to live above a shop but the House Fairy will wave her wand shortly and Helqueen can move up market.

Annette, in her pyjamas, went down the stairs from the flat, to let herself in the shop to do the newspapers.

She also once surprised Susan by using the door to the shop (presumably in the hallway leading to the stairs) to go and get chocolate - how she got the newspaper sorting job.
