Can anybody help...?
My mother has two letters written to her approximately 57 years ago, from her grandmother. They mention a character in The Archers called Audrey. We have tried to find out who she was but with no luck.
The first mention is "Poor Audrey - hasn't she been in a muddle?" and then the second letter says "Do you still listen to The Archers? I am glad Audrey was a good girl after all."
Does anyone know who she was and what she had done?!
Thanks!

Hi Whizz
I'll contact the archivist for you and see if she has any information on this - sounds intriguing!

The proper name of Shula's first mother-in-law is Audrey, I think.
Audrey Atkins and Amos Atkins, presumable her husband, are listed here but they ring no bells with me.

Hi all
Reggie's right - it was Audrey Atkins.
She was employed as housekeeper to her uncle Amos. She was forced to work very long hours for very little pay. Sick of the treatment she ran away and was employed by Helen Fairbrother.
After the death of Amos in 1955, £300 appeared to be missing and it was generally thought that Audrey had taken it while settling his affairs. The money was later discovered by Len Thomas behind a loose brick in Amos's kitchen. The find exonerated Audrey.

That's fantastic...thank you very much!
My mother and I have been desperate to find out who Audrey was and at last we know. Brilliant.
I think her name's Bunty Mustafa.

Quite agree - but you can bet your bottom dollar she was not christened 'Bunty' though, Maras, and it was to that that I alluded in my post.
In the same way that Jill calls her younger son David, and some here know him as 'Dopey', Mark's mother is (I still believe) called Audrey, but is known as 'Bunty'.
Maybe she had lots of bunts? Who knows.

There seems to be an Audrey on the parish council as well. Is this Mark's mother (surely not, she must be nearly 90, and I don't think the Hebden's live in Ambridge) or someone else?

Hi flameofthewest
The Hebdens live in Borsetshire. And I'm pretty sure that the Audrey on the parish council isn't Mark's mum.

I wonder how old the two recent Audreys (hebden and Parish Council) are? Could they have both been named after Audrey Hepburn? Or would they be too old for that?

That story of the missing £300 seems fascinating.
And we moan about today's SLs.
