Why couldn't I sign in to TA yesterday but had no problems normally?

Yesterday 29th April 2011, the day of the Royal Wedding, I couldn't
sign into TA although I was on it, Thursday and had no problems
then, same today, Saturday 30th April 2011.

Did another TA poster have similar or the same problems or was it
    just my computer?

I am not technically minded but had a idea that it might have been
because the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú sites were being used more than normal causing
    glitches??

    Thanks

    Rosalind

we were all locked out. In fact it was very diffuccult using any Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú site. I think the excuse was "sheer volume of traffic"

That is an "interesting" excuse. My thoughts as well.

Because it doesn't happen when things like the Budget or elections
    (AV referendum) happen.

Peet had a technical explanation along the lines that the traffic on the website yesterday was so enormous that the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú had to switch some things over to a back-up server but its security certificate wasn't up to date - so when we all tried to get onto the boards, having supposedly been validated by the back-up system, the main servers didn't recognise us as valid users and locked us out. The effect as a user was that even those of us who never sign out were repeatedly being asked to sign in but it wasn't working.

It was a bit annoying but in the great scale of things no big deal. Doesn't bode well for the future of this website, though, if very basic things like keeping the security certificates up to date are being overlooked.

Also, it would have been nice if the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú had found some space somewhere on this vast website to acknowledge that there was a problem and give some idea of when it would be fixed. Yet another sign that the MBs are dropping down the priority list like a stone.

Well said, Dragonfly. it doesn't bode well for TA/MLers does it pr
the other Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú messageboards as well, surely they should have
their security certificates up to date. Who knows what their
    anti-virus software is like.

Well I very much doubt, unfortunately, that there's anything like the same volume of traffic.

Lets see what happens with the MayDay Monday's Bank Holiday if the online Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú traffic is too busy for the regular posters
and get locked out, hope not.

It's not the message boards that needed a security certificate, it was the backup server (a computer/storage device) to which files were transferred when the main servers got overloaded. Internet servers have to have security certificates in order for other computers (including yours and mine) to connect to them via the internet: if you try to connect to a server which doesn't have a security certificates, warnings will flash up in your browser. In this case, as I understand it, it was one Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú server, which contained the message board data, not accepting data from the other, back-up server, to which our log-in data had been transferred.

I wasn't too bothered about it. It was obvious that everyone had been locked out, because no new messages were being posted to the board (or, at least, fewer and fewer as more people got locked out, and eventually came to a halt.) These things happen in computer-land, and usually get sorted out quickly enough.

I wasn't too bothered either, Leaps, as I had better things to do that day*, but if Private Eye is right about the enormous sums the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú is paying Siemens to manage its IT systems not turning out to be very good value for money, as a licencepayer I'm not happy about that.

My own employer contracts out a fair amount of its essential services, including IT, and over and over again it has turned out that going for the lowest tender was a false economy.

Thanks Leaping Badger. that is very interesting but I couldn't
even get onto the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú news sites on Friday, which I use a lot
as well as this ML/TA boards.
Yes I do sometimes get asked to update security certificates
like for my ISP email company stuff. I did say that I'm not very
    technically minded which is true.
Also that the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's backup servers should already have their security certificates updated being such a big corporaation/company IHMO

Wasn't just the punters either. In the Mayo/Kermode film programme, which they recorded at 3 pm for broadcast later on, they discussed the fact that they could not themselves access 5 live webpage to check what was being displayed in the middle of the afternoon. According to Simon Mayo, practically the whole website had seized up due to heavy traffic.

Bring back Dickon and Howerd2 heroes. At least when that fell over, as it frequently did, we knew it was experimental and edgey. Message boarding by the seat of your pants doesn't cut it any more unless you are Tweeting the Egyptian Revolution or Osama: the Final Chapter.

I've started sellotaping messages up in my front window. It's the next big thing, I tell you. And hasn't crashed once yet.
