My eyes bled when I saw how her name is spelled on this site - Izabella Urbanowickz as Zozia- with a k in the middle of a cz (two consonants which make one sound). This would never happen with a real Polish name so I looked her up, thinking she might be from one of those families who mess with their names, and she does in fact have a Polish background (Ealing's a pretty good indicator) and her name is in fact misspelled, as is her character's name.
C'mon guys....
Two mistakes? How hard would it have been to check this with her?

Typical, I'm afraid. Just look at the number of ways in which Brian's son's name is spellt.
"Funny foreign names", you see, Basia. This Polish stuff, far too many consonants, you see, so what will one more matter? No-one will notice, and a spell-check won't pick it up either.
Yes, it's sloppy.

Um, but that's by posters on the message board. Basia's talking about mistakes made by the programme-makers themselves.

Hi Basia
I've passed this on to the team to correct.
Thanks
Tayler

Yes, true. The point I was trying - obviously unsuccessfully - to make is that we have a distressing tendency to pay very little attention to foreign names. There's almost a pride in being unable to spell them correctly, in the same way as people here take pride in knowing no foreign languages.

That is nonsense, Judith. Speak for yourself on this one, but kindly don't generalise about the rest of us.

Oo er!
I try to spell names correctly. Some people who post here, as well as many people in RL, don't. And I do think that it exempifies an attitude to anything foreign.
You disagree. No need to be rude.

By whom? Not me.

If everyone who writes on this MB cares so much about spelling, how is it that Ruairi's name is given at least 4 different spellings?
And in the world beyond this MB, there are large numbers of the population who simply don't care enough to spell or pronounce any language but their own. That you haven't met them doesn't mean that they don't exist.
And someone mis-spellt two Polish names on this site. Careless or didn't care?

Ruairi is not a real person.
The actor who plays Zofia should have her name spelled correctly by the production team, she IS real.

Exactly so, Sallyruth.
Judith, your assertion that we all resist things and names 'furrin' is incorrect, an outdated stereotype, and just a tad insulting.

It's possibly a Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú thing. When I was on "Feedback", the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú woman I was talking to was called "Alix Pryde". (Really!)

OK, Dresden, so what I said doesn't apply to you, therefore it applies to no-one. Good logic.

Thanks Tayler. I feel really embarrassed now for embarrassing someone else, but I'd feel pretty bad if I were responsible for misspelling someone's name in a professional context so best not to let it stand I guess. I was in denial for a few days and ignored it until I looked her up. Eeek.
And I definitely did not intend to start a spatty thread, excl mk.
Basia, speaker of 4 languages and quite proud of it.

Was just about to reply my skunky friend. Bx

Some years ago, a friend of mine was speaking after an event in which there had been a number of invited Polish participants.
In an attempt at humour, he said that he had no idea how one of the Polish surnames should be pronounced but that it would be worth a cricket score at Scrabble.
The room erupted in laughter, save for the Polish delegation who, unable to understand the joke, thought that their country had been insulted.
Much vodka later, ruffled feathers were duly soothed.
