Walking to the pub, he was terrified of a cow, to the extent that he had separated from Harry and Zofia?
("Is it chasin' me? I cannae look.." (With terror in his voice, it wouldn't have been pitch dark and he was still sober))
As Dusty wrote "Some years ago,, Jazzer famously knew when cows were making the 'wrong noises' and alerted Tom to some empty 'drinkers'", Chris Ghoti pointed out "When Ed did his runner and left Oliver in the lurch, it was Jazzer who helped with the Grange Farm herd of cows. He knows and is not afraid of cows" and Irene also remembered that when Jazzer got his first job with livestock, Neils pigs, he said his Mother had always said he was good with animals.
His fear, as contrasted with Harry, (a confirmed townie?),and Zofias calmness, provided what the SW seemed to think was an "amusing comic turn", but why did a former stockman behave in such an uncharacteristic way?

It made the basis for a "comic scene", so it wasn't a random coincidence - someone decided that it would be a good thing to write the character that way, but what if anyone needs a temporary herdsman? Will all this be conveniently forgotten?

I thought this was very strange too but then the entire evening was weird. Who would stand up to sing kareokee with someone who wouldnt tell them the song they had selected and what pub would find two blokes singing that paticular song entertaining?

Because it was 'comedy', Carrick, and therefore normal character traits are thrown out the window.

I thought Jazzer was just playing the fool. His nose has been put out of joint and he was miffed.
Him `being afraid of cows' was the least bizarre part of the SL. Him being there at all was unbelievable

Surely his Ketamine poisoning mental health paranoia must be kicking in. I was a bit confused he'd made a full recovery from that. I was beginning to assume he'd made an Ernest saunders style recovery from alzheimers by doing a short stretch in Ford open prison.

There's been no answer to this, and I still can't think of a reason why.
Maybe it was ironic, or something?

Well I can't remember the exact circumstances - but you could say that Jazzer *does* know cows and that they can be deadly if they are spooked.
THe other explanation is that Jazzer was playing the fool ..

Neither of those convince me. I can see Jazzer playing the fool at someone else's expense, but not entirely against himself, and moreover for Harry and Zofia's amusement when they clearly don't care anyway.
And as for him thinking they might really be spooked, good stockmen should know when to be careful, but he just panicked.
As you said yourself upthread though, what he was doing there in the first place is an even greater enigma - the whole SL stinks, imo!
