We have this online message board for discussing the Archers. Why do we need Facebook and Twitter as well? Does any one do all of them and if so, what is the difference?

    Hi Elasticwoman,

We provide updates on Facebook and Twitter to update listeners who don't visit the messageboard about what's happening in The Archers and provide an opportunity for them to post comments about the programme.

Discussions on Facebook and Twitter tend to be much more brief so the messageboard is the best place to come to for anyone who wants to talk about The Archers in more detail.

Will the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú be publishing updates on DIASPORA* too, when it finally launches, or will they just continue to stream users towards Facebook? It seems odd that links can be removed from threads because somewhere in a sidebar they're selling a tee-shirt, yet the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú overlooks the hugely commercial facets of Facebook.

Indeed, Peet. I find it perplexing that the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú are pushing Facebook, which is a huge commercial proposition. My thoughts on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú presenters and Twitter are probably best kept to myself.

    Hi PST,

I'm not sure what the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú's plans are for Diaspora at this stage but I'm sure they'll be keeping an eye on it.

As for posts on the messageboard containing links, we usually hide only those that are directly promoting a product or service or that are obviously sending users to another site for commercial purposes.

That's not strictly true nowadays - for a couple of months now, when I post a link to let someone see a particular computer spec. or similar I have to make sure there's not a "purchase" button on the page, else it gets modded away with alacrity. It's only been like this for the last couple of months - there seems to have been some sort of policy change. I remember similar things happening back around 2002/2003, but I thought we were past that now.

Oddly, I've noticed that "purchase pages" for items that cost under £5 seem to pass through unscathed... Not complaining, just observing.

I've had several messages removed for advertising over the past couple of months - something which had never happened before - which have then been reinstated when I appealed their removal. There is definitely more stringent moderation - inappropriately so, in many cases - than there used to be.

    Hi all

I've checked up on this and there's been no change in policy but in response to your posts, a reminder has been sent round to the moderators to ask them to be mindful of whether a link has been posted with direct intent to sell or has been posted for illustrative purposes.

One other reason for a link being removed is if the page it links to contains unsuitable advertising.

If you find it happens again, please let me know.

Nobody answered my question as to whether any one does them all.

So Facebook and Twitter are to Mustardland what civil partnership and cohabiting are to marriage?

I do them all Elasticwoman - but I guess that's my job! I've spotted some Mustardlanders on Twitter and some that have said they're on Facebook.

Umm. . there's a slight problem with this method of communicating, Tayler. The Mustardland group page is not available unless you are signed in [and in order to sign in you have to have an account.] The link given for Twitter brought up "sorry! this page doesn't exist."

The point about Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú webpages, surely, is that they are available to be read by anyone, any time, anywhere.

It worked for me just now. Perhaps you need to be a member of Twitter to see it.

Don't think so, Peet. I occasionally read Twitter streams(?) for organisations I belong to and you don't have to be registered just to see the tweets, only to get an alert [or a squawk or whatever they call it - I've never investigated the business end.] It's pretty pointless really becuase the kind of organisation I follow will invariably send out e-mails either before or immediately after tweeting, so you'll only get the reminder/update if you're glued to a screen all day. Same for Facebook in that Fb marketing tools, like the putative page for Bridge Farm or Hasset Hills Lamb choose to be read by anyone who finds or follows a link.

Swerving back on the track to Ambridge: you'd be surprised how many people still respond more positively to a well-thought-out leaflet in the post than they do to yet another RSS feed. Even leaflets which don't have a picture of a cow on the front.

‘We have this online message board for discussing the Archers. Why do we need Facebook and Twitter as well? Does any one do all of them and if so, what is the difference?’

I’ve just posted a possible rationale on the thread below. The announcers suggest that the listener goes to Facebook or Twitter (because that is what a lot of people use) and those media are full of Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú originated messages pointing them to the program or to these boards.

I think it is a pretty subtle marketing.
