John was their eldest child and he died when he overturned a tractor. It was Tony who found him. IMO Tony finding him was the most memorable moment ever in the Archers.

John had been perfectly beastly to Tom for years, but Tom worshipped him, and took to wearing his clothes after his death...

Hi MYMAIL
If you go to the Timeline, there's a clip of Tony discovering John at the scene of the accident - go to 1998

Yes, magnificent acting.
No signature music, just silence. A truly masterly moment of sensitivity.
And not flagged up for six months beforehand ...
thanks taylor
i am not much of a techy but will try

None of that rings any bells with me.

I remember on the website the if you went to the archive for that episode it was shrouded with black background and border. I agree it was a truly surprising event.

I thought somebody might remind me of episodes to illustrate their point as I don't have any memory of such incidents.

I don't remember Tom being badly treated by John, but I do remember that John was always the favourite Golden Boy, and also was horrible to the original Hayley, who was John's GF long before she got together with Roy. She found John together with Sharon on the sofa when she came home. It was because John was upset because he had upset her that he drove the tractor so carelessly.
I remember poor Tony finding John too. Wonderful acting.
Pat later had a breakdown. Helen stayed away from home for ages when Pat could have done with her presence, then came home, started throwing her skinny weight around, and was horrible to Hayley, causing Hayley to walk out of Bridge Farm, where she had helped Tom save John's pigs (initially against PnT's wishes).

So I'm not the only one who doesn't remember that while I do like you remember all the rest. I wouldn't say blanketly that Hohn was horrible to Hayley after all they were togethert for a long time and braved Peggy's disapproval to live together in April Cottage. He did then have another affair with Sharon.
He drove the tractor carelessly because after that he was beginning a reconciliation with Hayley, took her out to dinner and asked her to marry him and she refused. Not if I remember correctly definitively but she wasn't convinced yet.
yeah he was the golden boy.
Debbi crying to Pat sums it all up she like tom deeply loved John.
I wish I could cry to my mum like debbie did.

I think the poster meant Helen not Debbie.
It means nothing to me, either.
My clearest recollections of what happened after John's death are (a) Pat's breakdown; and (b) Helen's despicable behavour towards Hayley.
I wasn't listening to the Archers back then, so I have just played the clip.
Very moving.
I have always wondered how much harder it is to play a scene such as that for radio. With tv or on stage there are props and scenery to put the actor in the right frame of mind, but there is none of that with radio.
