Why does Joe Grundy call some women "Missus" and some by their full name: eg "Hello Ruth Archer"? Is this socially significant or do I have too much time on my hands?

That's an interesting question. It may be to do with his relationship and level of familiarity with someone, or then again it may be something to do with their age relationship to him, then again it may be social as you suggest.
Until we have a definitive list of how he addresses who it's impossible to say anything definitevely.

He calls Vicky Tucker Missus which I think indicates that he thinks she is of equal social standing.
He definitely says Lynda Snell, Ruth Archer and Jennifer Archer and they are (in his view) of a higher social standing than him.
Just my opinion!
I'm sure it's always "Missus Snell"; I don't think I've ever heard him say "Lynda".

There's also his sideways move, when speaking of somebody to another party, e.g. 'The Widow Hebden'. I haven't heard him use this formulation for some time, but have faint memories of a 'Widow Perks' for Jolene.

I've been on tenterhooks since 1 January for the first mention of the Widow Pargetter.

If Stella Gibbons writer of the great Cold Comfort Farm was still alive you could ask her. It is all rather too 1930s to be real today.
I know loads of old country men like Joe, but have never come across it. We are in cod yokel here me thinks.
